Anyone done Locks of Love?

I've done it.

Hair has to be natural color with no treatment in it.

I've had people offer me money to grow and sell my hair because of the color. No thanks.

I have done it through a salon and even though I filled out a form I never received a thank you. I didn't even realize they did that. I think it would be fine for you to cut the hair and send it in yourself or I'm sure you could go to a salon and have them cut the ponytail and give it to you to send in. And tell you dd congrats, it takes a lot of time to grow hair that long.

I have done it 2 times. I sent it in and got a little postcard thanking me and put on newsletter list later.

Great what you are doing!

I have 2 Aunts that have done it as well as one cousin also. My girls will someday when they are ready for shorter hair. Right now they want to be Repunzel. :rotfl: They are not to far away. My 7 yr old has hair halfway to her knees and my almsot 5 has past her tosh.

I've done it twice. Both times I printed out a form from their website to send with the hair. The first time I received a thank you. Now I think they only send email thank yous. I haven't received one for my recent donation, though. I think it's a great cause.

My youngest dd 11 did this last year, her hair was 31 inches long and we donated 17 inches , WE went to a kids salon which does cut adults , if you want and They cut her hair for Free and even took a picture of her holding her ponytail , to hang on their wall at the salon, and she received a certificate there and another one from locks of love and it was the same certificate. Well by the end of next month her hair is long enough again to donate. Give you and your dd a big hug from us :grouphug: It's a great thing you are doing.

I wouldn't do it, personally. I've heard that not all of the hair is used for wigs for cancer victims. I've heard they sell the hair to foreign wig companies.

My next door neighbor had breast cancer and bought several wigs during her chemo, because she had no hair at all. She had one real-hair wig and a couple made of faux hair. She said the real hair one was a big PITA because of the maintenance it required. The faux ones just required brushing/styling and they were ready to go.

Besides..I find it kind of icky..the idea of wearing somebody else's hair. If and when I ever get breast cancer (which with my family history, it's almost a certainty..it's just a question of when), I'd rather wax and polish it than wear somebody else's hair! :teeth:

TOV

Edited because I would most certainly be banned and this poster wouldn't be worth it.

I got mine cut at a salon for free, then mailed it myself. It took a long time - I think 3 months? - for the certificate to come.

Actually, they have revised their policy and now you can send colored hair as long as it is not damaged.

According to the Locks of Love website:

"Hair may be colored or permed, but not bleached or chemically damaged (if unsure, ask your stylist)."

Ooooh--this is AWESOME news. I color my hair, but it is so healthy and strong and shiny. (if I do say so myself :) ). I've been growing it out, and it's just past my shoulders, and I've always cut short when it gets this long. It's staying now. 10 inches, here I come.

I would have NO problem whatsoever if Locks of Love sold my hair to help their program. None at all.

I'd see if the salon will do it and thenallow you to send it for your DD to receive a certificate. I think it'd be a great page in a scrapbook! Of course, you don't *need* a certificate, but it would be nice to have. Or you could cut it off at home and then go to the salon to have it shaped up and styled. I always cut it off for L.O.L. and then recut it for a true style.
I think it is a great organization and a wonderful gift that you are doing for others! Hair tends to be an important part of most of us--just ask us on a bad hair day!!!

DH actually does this all the time. (He has a ponytail and the most georgous cirly dark hair) Although he has never gotten the certificate, it is still a great cause. We always do it through our local Great Clips.

I suggest sending it in yourself to get the certificate.

Your DH isn't the only male. We had a teenaged boy at our local high school who was growing his hair for Locks of Love, but the school board wouldn't let him have long hair. The story made the national news-it was so sad!

WOOHOO! Thanks!

No problem--I thought I couldn't do it too, but a friend pointed out that they had changed it. According to another friend, the salon they went to told them that most of the LOL hair ends up getting dyed to go in wigs together.

The sweetpea has done this once before a few years back and is planning on doing it again. She saw something on the Locks of Love on a news show and asked if she could do it. We grea out her hair and sent it in. We never did recieve a certificate though. But thats not why she did it. She wanted to help kids who didn't have hair. Her hair is long again and she is debating on weather to go for a short hair cut, or stick it out a bit longer and grow more so when the 10in is cut, she will still have length. Jury is still out for her. Its a great cause and Im glad to see so many participating.

My 7 yr old DD did just this at our town's annual Relay for Life last June! She was so excited. I had never cut her hair & it was past her waist...when she wanted it cut I told her the only way I would do it was if she cut it for locks of love. She wanted it really short anyway!

She donated 12 inches of beautiful hair & did get a thank you card from locks of love.

She was thrilled. A local salon cuts hair at our RElay event each year. They do it for free & are thrilled with kids that want to donate!

My daughter and I do it because we have red hair and its harder to come by than the other colors.

Have never gotten a certificate though, not that it really matters......

My daughter did get a little upset once because she has done this several times ( she is only 7) and one year in our local newspaper they made a big deal about this other girl getting it done once, she was a little upset that no one wrote a story about her and how many times she has done it( the whole article was basically making a big deal because the little girl was 10.....) I was a little upset but then again I dont call the tabloids when I do something nice :rotfl:

Glad you guys beat me to this. I was going to say the same. The last time I did this I had received a perm less than 2 months before. Funny thing is that it was such a great perm too. But the urge hit me to get it done again and I had to do it.

Once life stops being so crazy for me I'm going to grow my hair out again.

This is address on their website. All you have to do is pull it up.

1 We accept 10" minimum hair length (tip to tip), not wigs, falls, or synthetic hair
2 Please bundle hair in ponytail or braid.
3 Hair needs to be clean, dry, placed in a plastic bag, then padded envelope.
4 We need hair from men and women, young and old, all colors and races.
5 Hair may be colored or permed, but not bleached or chemically damaged (if unsure, ask your stylist).
6 Hair swept off the floor is not usable.
7 Hair cut years ago is usable if it has been stored in a ponytail or braid.
8 Hair that is short, gray, or unsuitable for children will be separated from the ponytails and sold at fair market value to offset the cost of manufacturing.
9 You may pull curly hair straight to measure the minimum 10".
10 The majority of all hair donated comes from children who wish to help other children.
11 Layered hair may be divided into multiple ponytails for donation.
12 Please note: Anyone can cut your hair as long as the above guidelines are followed.
