Anyone concerned about the Coronavirus in WDW ?

The second case of Corona virus hit Washington State and now everyone there is running to get masks.

That is what many people don't seem to understand. That number has the potential to overwhelm the healthcare system in this country and every other country. It is not the number that die because of the virus. It will be the number of people that die of other things because they can't get proper care because the healthcare system is overloaded.

That’s where my head is at in this discussion. The economy is the least of my worries.

I would feel a lot better about traveling if there were assurances that the government would not be shutting down air travel, imposing mass quarantines, or severely restricting who can get on an airplane. Right now, I'm afraid for two family members who have plans to travel to the Seattle area over spring break. I hope they don't catch the virus, but most importantly, I hope they can get back to college when their visit is done. I'm a little worried that new domestic travel restrictions will be put in place by the time they are due to fly back.

The vast assumption is that we are significantly under estimating the amount of current or past cases, which means the percentage of serious or critical cases is probably much lower than currently reported.

Everyone should practice standard precautions, high risk individuals should maybe take more serious precautions. But shutting down large portions of our economy and schools, for what, months? That is just unrealistic and will cause other similarly dangerous problems.

Yep. No way I believe the numbers from China. Will need to see what this virus does in the free world. I'd say let's be smart. If you can work from home, why aren't you doing it already? Wash your hands. Use hand sanitizer. Don't go to work or school, or out, if you are sick. Get rest. etc etc. We should treat it like we should be treating the flu.

We are talking about a virus that started in a place where spitting in public is common. Hand washing is not. It's gross there, folks. I was in the toy biz for over a decade. I've been there.

I'm curious about the projected duration of COVID-19. How long could this situation possibly linger?

Yes.. and combined with the air pollution, its no wonder people are having lung issues. That being said, while the US isn't exactly known for its mass amount of spitting, I wouldn't exactly put us up there as the "hand washing" capital of the world either. To.. further quote you:

"Its gross out there, folks. I've got Crohn's Disease, and spend all too much time in bathroom stalls. The number of people who walk out of the bathroom without washing their hands in the US is shocking. I've been there" ;)

You can’t even get folks here to get the flu shot. We have a whole set of different problems that will enable this virus to spread.

We have 1.77 hospital beds per 1000. 10%-20% needing beds would require hundreds of beds per 1000. We need to slow this down or preventable deaths with happen.

This reminds me of this picture I recently saw about the Spanish Flu (which often gets compared to COVID-19). The fact that this sign was necessary in the US in 1918, but would be unusual to see today, says a lot about how hygiene practices have drastically changed over the years.

That, and the number of people who 1) don't have paid sick leave and are living paycheck-to-paycheck (and the "show up to work no matter what" culture in many business places in the US), and 2) those with no insurance or HDHPs that cant afford to go in until they are in a very bad place. Hopefully there start to be options to help with 1) (such as businesses allowing individuals to work from home, or providing paid sick leave temporarily). 2), I am not so confident about.

Especially when you consider that health care workers who may get infected will in turn have to be quarantined. We don't have an infinite number of health care workers.

Anyway, I don't think most of these considerations as hysteria-based at all. It's just realism. Our healthcare system is not built to be sustainable in a situation like this one can become. And people worrying about costs of treatment is going to put others at risk. If only there was a way to avoid that kind of thing.

Not every doctor recommends the flu shot. It's a decent tool, but doesn't guarantee you won't get the flu, since it evolves and may arrive wearing a phony mustache disguise. ;-) CDC says its 40-60% effective. Sounds a lot like 50/50 to me...

I had the flu shot and got the flu. However, my temp topped off at 100.5. My colleague who didn’t get it had a fever of 103.

What if this new virus evolves? Should people not get a vaccine?

Evolves?
It being a newly emerged coronavirus kind of means it has already evolved.

You have to look at the petri dish you are exposed to WDW. Packed monorails which are not sanitized on hourly basis. Enclosed waiting areas which can be very confined. Bars on rides that you have hold onto. Children (and adults) who have not been taught to cover their moths when they sneeze or cough. Is it really worth spending 4-5 thousands of dollars to be always listing for that cough from someone or wiping down everything every minute. I would rather skip one year and have a relaxing time.

I think mutate is what viruses do not evolve. That’s why there is a new flu shot every year unlike, say, the measles where you only need the one
