With my last phone I unlocked it myself using directions on the internet, but they've updated the android os so you can't do that anymore. A lot of people seem to buy codes on line. I tried to do this today, $13US and I paid via paypal. Got a message follow up that I need to verify by sending a scan of my driver's licence. Huh? So I cancelled the order.

Still want to get my phone unlocked this week to use my Roam sim when I'm in the US on business next week...and don't want to pay Bell $50 for the privilege...

I've bought 3 different codes on the internet (different companies) and had no problems with the codes. I found different companies seem to come up depending on the model of phone you search for. Certainly never had to send my D/L to any of them. All responded within 24 hours, as little as 2 hours for one. Had one glitch with one of the codes, but managed to figure it out by reading through a few internet posts. Not really the fault of the unlock code, more an idiosyncrasy of that particular brand of phone.

For a little more than buying your code, but less than Rogers/Bell, you can get one of the kiosks at a mall to unlock it for you. Should only take an hour, and at least they take the blame if they brick your phone (I have never bricked a phone, but did manage to brick a rocket stick in the past).
