We are seriously thinking about doing away with our small kitchen table and building an island with base cabinets and a countertop so I will have more storage. Has anyone else built their own? Did you have to bolt it to the floor?

Well, not exactly. We bought an unfinished furniture kit and built it from there. It was easy. And no need to bolt to the floor. It is quite heavy when filled.

We stained ours and we always get compliments on it.

My SIL built one recently and put casters on the bottom. It can be rolled out of the way and parked against the wall or wherever she wants it. Has nice storage underneath and she designed it to match already existing cabinets. Looks and functions great! Options are almost endless as to size and design.

Thanks to both of you for your help! I thought about putting some sort of wheels under it but I was concerned about the weight of it and the contact points of the wheels to the floor. Your SIL's doesn't not leave 'dents' in the flooring? TIA

We bought an island table and stools from Raymour and Flanagan. Plenty of storage underneath. Can seat 4-5.

You do not need to bolt the island. We used 3 double door base cabinets. I suggest you use newspapers to figure how large you can go. I wanted good traffic flow & to be able to have have someone sitting at island & open fridge dishwasher ect. We can seat 10 to 12 at our Isalnd. I have 6 chairs with backs & 2 matching without backs. The trick is to get GOOD bar stools with big seats like a dinning room chair. My MIL was so upset we did this saying she can not sit on bat stools. She can on ours. Now we left 12 iches of overhang on 1 side & 8 inches on ends. The other side has the Doors & Drawers... you do not hav eto make the counter flush here. You can leave about 4 inches of overhang so someone can sit on that side. I have the 2 stools without backs on that side oven is on that side. I am the only one who sits on that side. At partys we use that side.

WARNING: I have turned into the snack Bar lady.

No dents that I'm aware of. Don't know the dimensions and weight but will ask DH if he has some idea regarding this. *Stay right where you are for the answer. He'll be home around 1 a.m.* :rotfl: Would gladly get more info for you from SIL but she's out of town.

We just built one last year. You dont have to bolt it to the floor. But ours was built around a support beam and it stationary. It has a huge granite top, shelves on one side, two stools on another, and deep drawers on the other. It looks great and is very functional. Of our whole kitchen remodel, the island is my fave thing.

Thanks for all of your input! This information and your experiences make me excited to get my island going! pixiedust:
