Has anyone been to Shades of Green and if so what were your thoughts on it? Dh says he is not sure he would want to go there.
I think he thinks it would be to much like work and would have a hard time relaxing *shrugs* I'm not really sure why he feels that way lol

We stayed there this past may for the first time. Everything is tax free.
It's nice. The rooms are huge wit 2 queen size beds a pull out couch bed also a small refridgerator. We had a balconey view in the old wing. We thought the place was really relaxing. You can walk to the Poly and catch the monorail or the golf cart shuttle will take to the ned of the driveway. There is a starbucks kiosh near the lobby. The rsort it self is a little spread out. The pools are ok and there are towels. They have a laundrymat also.
The resort is centrally located you are also within walking distance of the TTc.
The only negatives are the bus system, the buses are a little old and didn't always run on time. Plus the resturants are not the greatest. Ther other negative for some people there is no disney magic but it didn't bother us we made our own. Overall we enjoyed it so much we've booked our room for next may. I hope this helps

Sounds great! We are staying there in January, and I'm so excited! :yay:

We actually spend most of our time in the parks but I mainly wanted to hear about the resort because hubby made the comment that he spends enough time in military facilities and was afraid it would be the same old same old. He can be silly like that way.. It sounds good to me..Thanks for sharing your experience :)

We've stayed at SOG about 6 or 7 times over many years - the most recent time being a few weeks ago. We enjoy it. It is a very relaxing and peaceful resort. We always go in the summer during busy time, but the resort never feels crowded or loud. It is always very nice. We do not find it to be very "military" feeling - I don't think your husband would feel like he was still at work.

Please tell me more about the golf cart shuttle. We have family staying at the Poly while we are there and we want to meet up with them. How often does the golf cart shuttle run? How many people does it transport at a time?

Other than having to show your ID when checking in and there being a PX you wouldn't even know it was a military hotel. I think you husband will be pleasantly surprised. (And one nice thing is that a woman standing on a SOG's bus is practically unheard of - Uncle Sam seems to have taught some manners over the years.)

We have stayed there a handful of times and it really is a lovely resort. It doesn't feel military really at all, except like someone mentioned, having the PX and showing your id's (oh and the military times). I have to say, all the workers there are so courteous and polite and rather efficient. The rooms are spacious, the pools are nice. THe restaurants are lacking- but there are so many other places you can go in the world to eat. We always rent a car so I can't comment on the shuttles. I know if you decide to take a taxi- it was 10 dollars to the contemporary!

Thanks so much for all the input on this. Our next trip has already been booked at the Yacht Club but I think next time after that we will give Shades of Green a try. We drive down so we wouldnt really have to take the busses to the parks but we usuallly do anyhow and the idea of not having to stand at midnight after a long day in the park is very appealing. That alone would make it worth it to me hehe..

We are heading to SOG in January and wanted your thoughts on whether it's a good idea to rent a car. We won't be leaving the Disney complex but would be coming back in the afternoons from the parks for naptime.

thanks!

We love SoG and will be going in March 08 (hubby and me) and June 08 (with grandkids). It is a beautiful resort, like a modest Wilderness Lodge. Here is a website http://www.shadesofgreen.org/index.html

We have taken family and friends in the past and all love it. You can see MK fireworks from the top of the parking garage and on the old Magnolia Pool side. It has a hot tub that is moniteered so underage children do not go in and a wonderful work out room. It has lovely grounds and paths. Everyone there is so nice, including the guests.

We do take a car to use at MGM, Waterparks, and AK. Sometimes we even drive over to Epcot. We like the flexibility of a car, however we have used the buses in past and have never had a problem. If a SoG bus is not available we would take a Disney bus to the TTC and pick up the SoG bus there. We have never had to wait very long. We love it.

On our last visit in March 07, we even got a towel animal!!!! We were very surprised!!

We originally stayed at SOG when DH returned from deployment and I myself was VERY skeptical of staying at a military resort!! I am not a total hotel snob, but I know how bare bones the military facilities can be! When we drove up I was blown away. We entered the lobby and again I was blown away. We were placed in the older section of the hotel poolside and my son was elated we could open our patio door and be steps from the pool (now the newer rooms are a little walk to the pool, but still not a hike). We did eat at Mangino's (the Italian restaurant) and I feel the food is decent, better than Olive Garden. The Garden Gallery we did not try until my son and I stayed ourselves and we had breakfast each morning included with our room rate (it's a special they call Fun & Sun) -- and it is a good start to the day, typical breakfast buffet, but a good start if you ask me......lunch can be later since you filled up on a nice breakfast!

The rooms are BIG. We stayed at POFQ and AKL most recently and I gotta say the rooms at Shades are bigger than the savannah rooms at AKL. Two queen sized beds, a nightstand in between, a sleeper sofa, table with two chair (maybe three, I can't remember??), a dresser and a fridge (dorm sized, but good for water and a few leftovers). A safe is in the closet along with iron. The bathrooms are shower/toliet in one area and the sink/vanity in a separate area (good for different people getting ready -- you are not in each others ways). Now we have stayed in a handicap room and the bathroom is bigger and everything is in one "room" which I actually liked.

The bus is something I tried with my son one time last December when we were there and it was not for us.....we waited and waited and waited, everyone was looking at each other like what was the problem, and still everyone waited -- we left, got in the car and beat the bus to the park! So, I don't particularly like the bus myself -- so renting a car is something we do each time, no matter what. Plus renting a car gives you alot of freemdom of movement on and off property.

The golf cart shuttle, called the Shady Shuttle can handle I would say maybe four or five people maybe, I can't remember positively. Anyway, they run in the morning from I believe around 8 am until 6 pm to the end of the driveway. Getting back I have never done though, so I guess you could call the front desk and ask them to send the cart to pick you up?? We have always walked back or managed to grab a bus that was leaving the TTC.

I can say that when I take our son and go ourselves, I really like knowing I'm staying at Shades because I know where I'm going to be and how to get around easily. The rooms are way too large for just an adult and a child, but it's nice to have something that large if you are stuck for a few hours in the hotel (which we never have been, thankfully). My son likes to buy little hot wheels cars when he's there and he can run them from one end of the room to the other while I'm getting ready and that keeps him busy. He also enjoys watching the turkeys that come in the mornings (right up to your hands if you let them!). The place is REALLY and HONESTLY a nice relaxing hotel -- I have only once heard a couple of kids yelling and that was quashed pretty quickly by the parents. You don't have anyone wearing any uniforms so you really don't know who is who and everyone respects your space personally. You might get a "'mornin' maam or sir" and that is it unless you want to pursue a conversation and then it's pretty quick. The last time I was there I had a gentleman help me with my luggage when we were leaving -- he INSISTED on helping me after I said I could handle it; he said I didn't need to handle it alone, he would help and took the suitcase to the car with his wife and I in tow.

For the money, convenience, quietness and everything else, hands down I'll continue to stay at Shades for years to come!! I shudder to say though -- it feels comfortable.....something I would have never thought possible in a military hotel!!

one thing the DoD run hotels do right is get rid of most obvious military trappings.

I have been to Hale Koa, New Sanno, and SoG( before the renovation) and aside from the occasional uniform, you'd never know. and the prices compared to similar venues can't be beat!

I've been to SOG many times and we really enjoy it, plus my father (military) loves it because he enjoys talking and interacting with other service men and women. I think it'd be easy to relax and have fun anywhere you are while at Disney World, but SOG is really a very fun and relaxing atmosphere.

We have been to SOG perhaps a dozen times. It doesn't seem military/gov at all. Very relaxing and easy to get around. Two 18 hole golf courses right at the resort plus a nine hole walking course.

Very affordable eating at the Evergreens sports bar beside the pool.

The transportation is good as long as you know the bus schedule. For example, they may pick up at AK once an hour, if you get to the bus stop 5 minutes after the bus departed you will have to wait 55 minutes.

We are heading that way in early Oct.

Thanks for all your replies. We already have res for November but hubby agrees after reading all your imput that we should give Sog a try.
I hope no one took me wrong, I know a lot of guys like talking military talk and my husband absolutely would never choose to do anything other then what he does but he just doesnt want to talk work or feel like he is at work while on vacation. You all have set our minds at ease and we cant wait to visit Sog ;)

Shades of Green is a beautiful resort. Aside from seeing many military haircuts, you wouldn't think of this as a military hotel. One VERY nice benefit is there is no tax on anything! The price you see is the price you pay.

I can't say this enough...If you like ice cream, check out the ice cream parlor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They have many different flavors, toppings, whipped cream...oh my it's good!...and it's inexpensive.
