Some friends of mine, DH, and I are planning on visiting Schlitterbahn sometime this summer, probably next month, and we're having a hard time deciding which Schlitterbahn to visit. My friends and I have been to the one in New Braunfels (about 4 hours away) and all loved it. None of us have been to Padre at all, let alone the Schlitterbahn there. DH hasn't been to any Schlitterbahn.
The advantage of the Schlitterbahn in New Braunfels is it's only about 4 hours away and has TONS to keep us busy, plus there's the option of Sea World or Fiesta Texas, both of which I've been wanting to do recently. The downside is there are lines and one of the days we intend to go, only half the park is open (happens to be the half with more of the things we want to do, though, so that's not necessarily a negative). In the past when I've gone, it's fairly typical to stand in line so long that you're completely dry by the time you get to the water at the top again.
The plus of Padre is it's new for all of us, and they have an innovative "line" system where you "float" in line along a lazy river, so there's no standing in line for 90% or more of the rides and you don't have to get out of the water unless you want to. It really sounds like fun. The downside is it's between 7 and 9 hours away and smaller than even the portion of New Braunfels' Schlitterbahn that will be open that one day (by only one or two rides, though).
So, has anyone been to the Schlitterbahn in Padre? Is it worth the extra 3-5 hours' drive?
