Not to cause any problems -- but on our recent trip to Disney, the first night (monday) we all ate at Earl of Sandwich - DH had the Caribbean Jerk Chicken sandwich and the next morning was sick as a dog with a stomach/diarrhea (bug?) and spent the whole day in the First Aid station at MGM (thanks to all who helped him there) also- DD felt ill all that day (she had the ceasar salad)

On Friday night, we ate there again and my mother in law became ill (same feeling/symptoms as DH had) only a half hour or so after her meal!? She had the turkey club (with bacon) I had the same thing without the bacon and felt fine.

We LOVE Earl of Sandwich, but now my DD is calling it "Hurl of Sandwich!!" Just wondering if anyone else has had any problems after eating there or if this could just be a virus we passed around to eachother?

From the way it spread through your family, it sounds like a virus was the culprit. Food poisoning can occur anywhere, of course, including WDW. But this sounds more like a virus. Hope everyone is feeling well now.

There have been some nasty viruses going around here in Kentucky. Unfortunately, with people coming to WDW from all over the world, visitors run the risk of being exposed to whatever bugs are going around.

would have to agree with the virus situation not that one can't get food poisoning anywhere, as you can.

However as stated there has been almost epidemic situations in various parts of the country with the stomach virus including central florida.

I have to agree with the virus conclusion. We were just down there 2 weeks ago. My son has the same symptoms and he never ate at EofS. Although my husband and I did and we had no problems.

Most likely a bug if several members of your family were infected over a 24-hour period....still nasty all the same but I wouldn't blame the sandwich

It was the water for me. Went solo to a conference at Coronado Springs; ate at Narcoosee's and was too "cheap" to pay for the bottled water, so chose the tap water and was very ill with bad cramps and diarrhea within 30 minutes of meal; thought it was the food until the same thing started to happen after about 1/2 cup water at Coronado Springs convention center; tested this theory twice. A friend had the same thing happen to him at MK one year. I'm not saying the tap water is bad for everyone, just affects some people differently. So now I'm afraid to drink tap water at Disney; if the restaurant doesn't have bottled water, I drink from the bottle I carry with me.

I would have to agree with the rest. I have had the same thing and it was a virus. It hit my family Christmast night (dh and youngest ds). Then a couple of weeks ago youngest ds and I got it. It's horrible!!!

Agree it sounds like a virus too. We visited my Wife's family a few years ago and the same thing happened, all got sick over a 24 hour period.

The likelihood of that many of you getting sick from food poisening over a period of time having different dishes is tiny.

There's a virus going around the whole country right now. Vomiting, diarrhea, sometimes fever and chills. We had it when we were on vacation and everyone at home and work had it, too.

Plus, according to my brother (who SWEARS by this info. from working in food service for many many years) if you have sickness within 30 min. of eating, it's not from the food you ate. It takes longer than that for your body to digest, etc. Food poisoning and other things (ie. e coli and other bacteria) take hours, not just 30 min. It was probably a virus already in their system, and eating just kinda aggravated it and got it going.

This is true, your brother is right. I worked in restaurants for years and learned quite a bit about food poisoning, bacteria, e-coli and all that. Food poisoning takes several hours to develop and the worst of the symptoms will usually show up in 15-24 hours. More than likely your family had a bit of the bug and possibly the food they ate could have just aggravated it, churned it up. Bacon from anywhere probably wouldn't have agreed with your mom, not just from EOS.

We just got back from WDW last night. On Thursday evening, after a day of eating sweets like crazy, and dh having a margarita and a beer in the hot sun, then having some fish and chips with vinegar on them, he got sick. He was out of commision the entire next day and only partly feeling better the following day. He claims it was all the junk he'd eaten rejecting the vinegar on his fish and chips. I claim it was a virus. DDs and I didn't catch it, though, thank goodness! The girls and I are meticulous hand washers while dh is not. Hmmmm.....????

This time of year is bad, let alone in WDW. We won't be going back in March for a good long while since DD (she was almost 2) became very ill last year with: strep throat (not common for babies at all), rotavirus, gastorenteritis, severe hydration and acidosis. We are more than vigilant about personal hygiene as she doesn't touch anything, never walks in bare feet - you get the picture. She was so ill that she spent 2 days in Arnold's Palmer Children's hospital and 1 day in a clinic at the beginning of trip. She had just had a physical - clean bill of health just days before, but got violently ill anyway. This has been talked about so much on these boards, but many people have no clue about personal hygiene and how their lack of it will affect others - especially those of us with compromised immune systems, such as a baby. As everyone also said, a virus is likely the culprit, as food poisoning doesn't hit that quickly. You all could have carried a virus with you , or caught something there. We've been sick when going in March and April, but never in July (we go several times a year as DVC members). As the pediatric specialists (my daughter had 3, she was so ill in isolation and we were from Canada - took amazing care of us!) all said, WDW is the nastiest place for germs there is - Orlando between Dec. and April has huge virus and strep throat outbreaks, but many travellers don't know this (we did, but thought we had done enough to combat it). One of the worst places in our opinion is Downtown Disney. The toy store is absolutely disgusting!! Also, people seem to drop off kids there, and so with so many restaurants and stores on property, there a lot of nasty germs running around there.

Hopefully you are all feeling better now. It's going to be hard not to associate yucky feelings with Earl of Sandwich, so perhaps on your next trip, you can eat elsewhere so that you all don't have such bad memories.

Healing wishes to you all, Tiger

It was the water for me.

You know, this is so strange. I have been to WDW numerous times. But my last trip in December 2005 was different. I had a severe stomachache the WHOLE trip. Never had diarrhea or anything, just a horrible tummyache. My husband never got sick and we ate a lot of the same things. I am chalking it up to the water. Here's why:

On the Friday of our trip I woke up feeling fine. I took my 2 morning meds with a good swig of tap water. A little while later, here comes the ache. I hadn't eaten anything yet so I know it wasn't any food.

Next trip I am stocking up on bottled water. Glad I'm not the only one who has experienced this.

I too would think virus. On our Thanksgiving 2002 trips, we spent Thanksgiving Day at Disney Quest. DH was the only one who ate pepperoni pizza (that's the only thing he had all day long that someone else didn't have). Went back in the afternoon to hang by the pool. DH starts complaining of not feeling well. Got ready for our 6 PM PS at WCC at WL. Thank goodness that is where we also stayed because as soon as we sat down DH said, "I don't feel good" and immediately went upstairs. This was Thanksgiving Day and we were flying home the next afternoon. DH was violently ill that evening. Called front desk and asked if there was doctor who could come see him. CM said they don't do that. Rode out the rest of the evening and took kids to CM for our final Character Breakfast. Had to quickly pack so we could get him to a "Doc in a Box" before our flight. Thank goodness they gave him a shot to stop him from getting sick so we could fly home. He was incoherent and I kept my doctor bills ready in case they wouldn't let him board.

We can chuckle about it now, but I hope nobody has to go through what DH did. Also slightly glad it was food poisoning since nobody else got sick especially since DS has Crohn's disease.

Thanks for the tip about the water. Even though we don't usually have problems with it, why take the chance!

DH and I got Brita water bottles before our last trip. We just got tap water everywhere and filtered it through the water bottle into a cup. We didn't ever get sick and we drank mostly tap water (mixed with crystal light packets). Maybe the filters get rid of the yucky stuff?

For all you guys that are blaming the water, you do realise that any pepsi or other soda from the "soda fountain" machine will contain regular Orlando water?

Yep, as was said before, this is true. It takes 24-48 hours to show symptoms, because the virus or bacteria has to build up toxins in your intestines.

There *is* something that can show after 4-6 hours, which is food intoxication from the staph bacteria. It comes from when people are staph carriers and prepare food, and then the food is improperly held for hours afterwards, and the bacteria in the food build up toxins. I've had it happen once, which was partly my fault - improperly holding the leftovers. But if it's something straight from the counter/restaurant, you're not going to get staph poisoning.

jkmmah, I'd definitely say that was from your husband eating poorly, not a virus.

And Kath2003, good call on the water, you're exactly right.

Yes I have thought of that, that's why I figured, "I just can't win." No matter how hard I could try, somehow someway I would be drinking Florida water.

I could very well be wrong, but I could come up with no other explanation for my severe stomachache.

A virus? :confused3 We all get the odd unexplained ache and pain - I very much doubt a water supply which feeds as many people as the Orlando supply does would be anywhere below standard? Whether you like the taste or not is another matter...
