we need a new dishwasher, and have been following the dave ramsey baby steps. We are getting ahead, but still have some credit card debt. anyway, we have cash to buy a new dishwasher, but want to get the best possible price. Dave says you can barter for things when you have cash. Have any of you done this before? how did you go about it? could use any advice you have. thanks. oh, we also would need to have it installed as well as having our old one hauled off.

I beleive the barter system is for services, not goods. Like your neighbor does landscaping and you know how to set up a home theater system. You then trade services, it neighbor does your landscaping for you and you do their home theater system for them.

Not necessarily called "bartering" but MOST appliances places have a price match system - for example:

Home Depot will price match + 10% if you find the same item somewhere else cheaper. I think Lowe's policy is similar. Check on delivery & removal of the old appliance as many will match the $$$ on that as well.

Actually, we did. My husband got our washer, dryer, and refrigerator from a client of his who owns a regional chain of appliance stores. He gave us a fabulous deal on them, and my husband is doing a bunch of work for him at cost for the supplies and free labor.

But I'm not sure how this would work for you, unless you happen to know someone who owns (or at least manages) an appliance store. We really lucked out.

My best advice for appliances is to go with scratch 'n dent. We have gotten all of our appliances brand new at Best Buy for 15-25% off the lowest sale price. Find one you like, wait for it to go on sale, then ask about open boxes (these are usually returns which they have already charged the 1st customer a 15% restocking fee). They will give you the discount off the sale price!

We have a brand new side by side fridge that I got for 25% off because it has a good sized dent on one side. It is the side that is next to a wall in our kitchen so I saw it when we bought and again when they delivered, but I haven't seen it since! Also, you can typically negotiate delivery fees/installation. I am usually able to get that down to free or a flat rate if you buy more than one thing at a time.

About the only bartering for cash I have ever been able to achieve was not using a credit card, getting 2% off the price for using cash. But not at any of the big stores. Usually at smaller places.

My tip? If you are not in a hurry, just stop by the stores and see what they have on clearance. I got $260 (almost half off) off my washing machine, $800 off my refrig (again, almost 1/2 off) and $250 (almost 35%) off my dishwasher. And these were all brand new and only the refrig had a ding in it.
It takes time to get bargains!

One other thing to consider is the discontinued (end of the model year) appliance. These are usually discounted nicely as the new model year appliances are coming in. I bought a Kitchenaid dishwasher which was originally $795 for $500 and a Frigidaire freezer (21 CU ft.) that was $899 for $549 due to the fact they were the old model year.

Try craigslist. It would be used.. but there is a barter section.

One guy went from ONE red paper clip.. and by only trading.. he ended up with a house. :)

you can read about it at:

So.. if you're determined.. then, sure. you can do it!

We got a great Bosch dishwasher that was a special order that was never picked up. $748 for $435

If you are buying a set of appliances, like say a fridge, dishwasher, and stove, then you can sometimes haggle on a package price and get a much better deal. They are usually not very flexible though if you are just buying one item. Hope this helps!

Be sure and check the coupon forums, or retail me not dot com for codes. Sometimes Home Depot or Lowes might have a 10 or 15% Off coupon.

Bartering usually means trading. You can often "haggle" with the appliance salespeople, especially at smaller stores. The appliance store near us offers "free" delivery, but when we offered to pick it up ourselves, they took $30-50 off. We negotiated a good price on my car by offering cash. The sales guy was startled when we started laying down $100 bills! My only other advice is to watch for sales. You might have luck contacting local builders. Often folks order appliances, then change their mind. The building company may have a storage room full of unwanted appliances and fixtures!

I once had an employee at Lowes tell me to never pay their marked price on anything, to always haggle for a better price. Since then, I do haggle on the more expensive items I buy there. Sometimes it works. Sometimes, not. They will always price match, plus give you 10% off if you find the same item for a cheaper price.

My neighbor owns an appliance store in town. We have a 30' X 52' metal barn frame that isn't finished. It is just the frame work and still needs the siding put on it to finish the barn. We already had a new barn we'd just had built when we moved here, so we didn't need the barn frame that isn't finished. Our neighbor has mentioned that he'd like to buy it from us, or he'd be willing to trade us a new stainless refrigerator or other appliances for it. We don't need two barns because we only two horses, and it'll cost at least $7000 to finish building the second barn. So I am tempted to trade the appliance store owner for the new refrigerator. The moral of this story is, yes, appliance stores will barter, and I'd think you should be able to get 15-20% off your dishwasher using cash. :cool1:
