Anyone a hamster expert??

Andrea, Hugs!

I know alot about hamsters but I've never experienced a stroke.

And I did take a hamster to the vet once upon a time. I had a hamster get so stressed out (one of his teeth got stuck in the lid of the penthouse on the habittrail!) that one of his eyes popped out! Youngest DS was beside himself. What could I do? $70 later Ludwig came home from surgery after the vet removed the popped out eye! (We nicknamed Ludwig "Popeye" after that!)

This can be your child's first indroduction to death. I agree with Brenda about having a funeral/burial.

:sad1: Thanks again to everyone for all your support and kind words, but Oreo passed away today. I had made an appointment with the vet to take her after school but when we put her in a box I was afraid she was almost gone. She took a few last breaths, and that was it. I told DD that Oreo waited for her to come home which it really seemed like she did...that was comforting to both of us.

Now I have another dilemma....it's about 17 degrees outside with a wind chill in the single digits...of course we have to have a proper funeral for her, etc....where are we going to put her? This has been a tough day...

Thanks again to everyone..it's so good to have friends.

Awww, sorry to hear about little Oreo, but it is for the best. I know this will sound gross, but if your DD wants a proper burial, I think I would probably put the little body in a ziploc and put her in the freezer. I know that sounds so gross, but I can't think of any other way to preserve her when it is too cold to bury her outside.

Maybe someone else has a good idea. It is nice that your daughter was able to see her alive one last time.

Oh i'm so, so sorry to hear about Oreo. I'm really sorry for you and dd.
The burial will give her closure, but I definatly see your problem with the ground being solid. Maybe since it is freezing outside, you can put her in a box and seal the box with tape, then keep her outside on the deck in the box until it is above freezing.
Sorry, I guess that sounds kind of lame, but I can't imagine what people do in these situations.
Good luck and again I am sorry for your loss.

I am so sorry about Oreo. How is DD taking it? Did she see her die? Poor baby. It is heartbreaking. DD had DH read something out of Psalms when Stitch died. He tried to be so serious and DD WAS so serious. He then said a few nice words about Stitch. Kids either seem to not really care and move on quickly or need the closure. We have 2 baby squirrels in our freezer downstairs waiting for burial. Persoanlly, I have not been able to part with them yet (good grief!) so they are still down there. They came as wild squirrels into the yard and one jumped on DD lap in the yard. it was an amazing 3 days with those squirrels. One of the highlights of my life, really. I am not sure if that is sad or what!
Anyway, I am sorry about Oreo and hope your DD is doing OK. It is a part of life that we must all face. It is just hard to say goodbye.

I so sorry to hear about the passing of Oreo :sad1: .

I agree with the idea of "preserving" oreo's body (freezing) untill a proper burial can be done...basically the same with what is done in a morgue. Another thought (although more expensive) is to take Oreo to your vet and have him cremated, you can even have his ashes returned to you for burial later if wanted (extra charge), or the vet will dispose of the ashes if you want, no extra charge.

 Hugs from a hamster house. 18 months is in the range of a normal hamster life span so Oreo live a long hamster life (one of ours died at that ae too).:grouphug:

My DD had 3 hamsters over at her Dad's house.....2 of them died when they were about 1 to 1 1/2 years old. I guess my ex doesn't know why, but I guess that is an age when things can go wrong. Good luck with your situation.

We live in Connecticut and our hamster died last winter. We made a nice hamster coffin out of fabric and batting and a nice box, put Pickles in it, and sealed it up and then put the box in a variety of bags, which DH put in a safe place in the shed and kept her there until the ground was soft enough to dig. He went out and checked every week if it was soft enough to dig and when it was he buried her in her hamster coffin and placed a rock over her grave. It's not a fantastic solution but it was the most respectful thing we could come up with. Good luck, it is always hard, and even more so when it's the kids' pet.

Andrea, Put Oreo in the freezer until Spring. Then you can have a decent, hamster funeral. Hugs to your DD (and you! )
