Andrea, Hugs!
I know alot about hamsters but I've never experienced a stroke.
And I did take a hamster to the vet once upon a time. I had a hamster get so stressed out (one of his teeth got stuck in the lid of the penthouse on the habittrail!) that one of his eyes popped out!
Youngest DS was beside himself. What could I do? $70 later Ludwig came home from surgery after the vet removed the popped out eye! (We nicknamed Ludwig "Popeye" after that!)
This can be your child's first indroduction to death. I agree with Brenda about having a funeral/burial.

Thanks again to everyone for all your support and kind words, but Oreo passed away today. I had made an appointment with the vet to take her after school but when we put her in a box I was afraid she was almost gone. She took a few last breaths, and that was it. I told DD that Oreo waited for her to come home which it really seemed like she did...that was comforting to both of us.
Hugs from a hamster house. 18 months is in the range of a normal hamster life span so Oreo live a long hamster life (one of ours died at that ae too).
