ChaCha Offers Instant Payments to Web Workers
Topic: search

If you're a broke college student in need of some last-minute scratch for tonight's hot dinner date, ChaCha can help you out.

ChaCha.com, a site offering human-assisted guided search, is introducing an instant payment system that would offer its contracted guides the option to get compensated for their time immediately via debit cards.

Here's how it works: ChaCha guides, many of whom are college students or work-at-home moms, can sign up for a card through the First Internet Bank. Once the card is activated, the guides go to work, logging a few hours at a time and generating wages between $5 and $30 per hour. Once they're ready to cash out, the guides can dump their earnings into their debit card account and instantly spend the money. The cards work just like any other bank card, so they can be used at cash registers and ATMs.

As a search engine, ChaCha is still an experimental tool. I tested the guided search and found that it returned relevant results, but the experience was slow. The six or seven guides I interacted with didn't point me to any resources I couldn't have found using Google. However, ChaCha is expanding its pool of search guides which should make the site more useful. The site launched the first week of September and currently has 2000 guides in training. Another 5000 guides are being introduced to the system. ChaCha got some positive coverage in USA Today when it launched.

Even if the search tool doesn't excite you, the instant payment system should. It signals a step forward for the thousands who make their living, or even just their spending money, on the web. ChaCha founder Scott A. Jones calls this new breed of web worker the "internet day laborer." They have the ability to get paid instantly for a day's -- or a few hours' -- work.

ChaCha's experiment of paying the work-at-home guides to build a better search tool is part of a broader trend to turn the collective wisdom of crowds into hard cash. Social news site Netscape.com is paying its top users up to $1000 per month to submit stories. The new Yahoo Current Network, which I wrote about yesterday, rewards users who submit videos with a $100 payout. Lensmasters at Squidoo.com get a share of the profits generated by ad sales on their expert opinion pages.

There's also a nation of AdSense devotees out there who earn hundreds of dollars per month simply by running Google-powered text ads on their sites and blogs.

Can this new crop of freelance experts re-write the playbook for earning money on the web? If you're one of those experts who makes a living sharing your knowledge and expertise, tell us your story.

There's a big thread about this over on the budget board.

I saw it the other day...That is actually how I got started with Cha Cha. I am SO addicted and have been on the site ALLLLL DAY! I just finished training and made $15 this evening ;) WOOHOOO! ! LOL.

OK, tell me what to do. I got an invitation, got signed in and all....now what? How do I get trained? I don't understand what to do next?

That sounds like a lot of fun, how can I find out more about it.

I just signed up and finished training tonight. I'm so excited. I've only made 81 cents so far but I'm having a lot of fun. The only problem is I keep getting searches from people looking for their friends. I got one for nip/tuck and one for spaying and neutering (neither are my key words) and they were both looking for a specific guide. Ooh, I'm now up to 1.66 and it was because of a Disney question. I'm so going to be addicted to this.

Open the ChaCha Application on your computer. You can then search around and watch the videos (located under "My account") and while you are doing that keep yourself on Available (the drop down on the top of the screen). It may take awhile but you will get a pop-up that asks you to accept or deny a search with a red training FLAG. Accept this and then start your training. The guide who is training you will help you through everything so ask questions.

Hope this helps! I got really immersed in it last night and when I saw my money adding up it really got me excited!

Yes, it helps....I actually figured it out because eventually I heard the doorbell and accepted a training. I guess I didn't know you just had to hang out and wait

I signed up for this last night, how long until you get a response from them about training etc.

You just have to be logged on and available and wait for the doorbell sound and then you accept it. It could be a minute or it could be a little while like 5 or 10 minutes. Just make sure you're "available". You can browse on the DIS and just listen for the doorbell in your other window while you wait.

I only filled out the thing on the website, I never received anything else.

I'm in the middle of a training search with a diser right now. I've actually done two searches with this person. I definately needed that after the awful person that I did a search for a minute ago. He asked a pretty easy question to answer and I found a couple sites very quickly. Apparently they weren't the exact sites he wanted because he then gave me a list of sites that he wanted. I wanted to ask if he knew the sites already why did he ask me? Of course he gave me a 0. I'm getting tired of some of these prank searches. Especially the ones that I accept because they sound real.

I don't understand, are you being trained? Or training someone?

When I was being trained I got scolded by by this one guy/gal who really started off with a chip on his/her shoulder that I coudlnt' get past no matter what I did. And believe me I was really schmoozing. I got this person everythign they wanted and more and they gave me a big 1 out of 5! I was so annoyed! And it was a disney cruise search...believe me I knew what I was doing and didn't deserve it!

I was training her. I had already started my post about training a diser when the door bell rang. It was the same person so while they were searching I finished my post. I just kept checking back every time I typed a few words to see if she had found anything or asked a question.
