The latest Mouseplanet Update has IaSW closed from October 19 through November 5 for the installation of the holiday overlay. The Holidays official start on November 13, so it was a matter of guessing whether it would open a bit early or not. The installation takes 18-days, so that's fits with a November 5th re-opening.
Yep, as Tina and figment_jii said, it's for the overlay. It happens every year. Since IASWH usually soft opens on the weekend before Veterans Day (and this year we were not originally certain if it would soft open until MousePlanet posted those dates), it has to close in October. It's an extensive, detailed overlay -- inside and on the façade -- so it requires a good chunk of time.
The whole façade is lit up in glorious color, so make sure you go back to the area to see it at night, even if you ride it in the daytime. I don't know if the usual projections on the façade will happen this year (because of the 60th), but we'll see. No real tips -- just enjoy!
They certainly don't open it until after Halloween Time but because of the time it takes to install the overlay, the ride has to close at that point in October. Otherwise, if they didn't even begin the installation until after Halloween Time, it wouldn't be ready on Veterans Day weekend, or even by the start of the holiday season.
Haunted Mansion has to close in August, well before Labor Day, for the same reason -- the Haunted Mansion Holiday overlay takes a while to install and it had to be ready by the start of Halloween Time.
Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy only takes a couple of days to install and uninstall.

Makes sense. I wasn't aware that the holiday overlay was so extensive.
That's so sad. I can't believe it. Our first DL trip in 12 years and I won't get to ride my favorite attraction. It's a family tradition to ride it first thing in the morning. It doesn't compare to DW's IASM D': I think I may cry!

The holiday version of IASW is fantastic -- a truly thorough makeover, inside and out. It's a shame you won't be there on 11/6, when it reopens. Sadly, this closure happens every year and it is usually for the same length of time.
