I want to get away from having a land line for internet. It costs me almost $50 a month for a basic phone line and DSL. AT&T has "partnered" with Direct TV in our area so that Direct TV won't carry any other internet providers:mad:.

So now I'm looking at Wild Blue. I'd have to buy their satellite system I guess (on top of the Direct TV one ugh) but then I could get internet for less than $100 for the YEAR. At least that's how I read it. Does any one else have this?

We have it through a deal with DirecTv. They had a reduced priced offer for the first year (not as cheap as what you're talking about though). We were able to get the equipment free though.

It's been vastly superior to the dial-up I had before. We're waaayyy out in the country and didn't have access to DSL at all. No major complaints here (you probably do need to know that it goes out just like the television does during rain storms). :)

I thought about losing internet during storms and we have a lot of storms here in Fl. but with BellSouth/AT&T I sometimes don't have service either for whatever reason:confused3.

Can you tell me how much the taxes are? It's the taxes on the phone line that really peeves me. I think a third of the bill is taxes :headache:!!!!

I was so excited by your post, I went to Wild Blue, it is 49.99 a month in addition to the cost of the dish, :rolleyes2 read it again, there are no cheap ways to get this, I wonder how fast the 49.99 a month will be , my luck it will be horrible, , but even teh 79.99 a month can not be used for games like World of Warcraft, won't work, which is why I have not gone in this direction I still have dial up oh well, I figured it would have to be the 79.99 a month in addittion to the start up fees, aol is now costing me 24.99, so I guess I'l just stay with dial up until the real world comes my way :confused3

Ack! Sorry, I read $89. for 24 months, not the monthly part:rolleyes:. I just HATE, HATE, HATE all the taxes they add onto the phone line. I could do witout a land line altogether if I could find a way to hook up to the internet without it. I don't need enough speed for WoW we don't do that stuff. Just read forums and look up info.

I asked DH (he takes care of the bill online), and he said that he didn't remember any excess of taxes. I would think it would be along the same lines as your DirecTV bill (but I can't say for sure since we don't have a bill here right now - you could call and ask though).

I was with Wildblue for almost 2 looong miserablly slow years, I was paying $85 a month for the "fastest" service. Acting on a suggegtion from my employers telephony deptartment I looked into MIFI. It is offered by about every cellualr provider and starts at $35 month (for 3 gb). It has a automatic overage that rolls in another GB for $10. I looked back at my previous usage and found it to be about 5GB, so even at $55 a month I figured I was saving $30 per month. I got the MIFI and I have to say compared to blues fastest service this thing is probably 3-4 times faster...
The MIFI came with a 30 day garantee, so the worst I could have lost was the $36 acess charge for that month...
I can't be anymore emphatic, try the MIFI, cause you won't come back to WB... BTW after one month, and using the internet as I usually do, 3GB was sufficient and so for that month, I saved $50...If you have cell serv ice in your area, the MIFI solution will be all you need

We just got rid of Wild Blue after much money and a horrible experience. After you pay a lot of money for the satellite, you then have to pay to fix it. It takes a long time to get someone out to the house to fix it. The first bill to fix it was around $400. The second time it broke it was going to cost another $400 and we refused and went to a landline internet. We were told by the guy that fixed it that they are always breaking. He thought 50% break. Wild Bue doesn't work when it rains or snows either.

We were also restricted in how much we did on the computer, they would actually slow us down or stop us. This happened one year my husband and I got a new computer and downloaded a lot of stuff and then my son got a new computer too and they threw a fit about our use.

Alert: This thread is over two years old so I doubt that the OP is still looking for advice! ;)

I posted on this thread previously, we left Wild Blue and now have MiFi.
