The announcement was a response, they’ve been developing the retheme for at least a year prior.

Agreed. But I still find the timing unfortunate when they are having to lay off thousands and cancel movies that they still have the money to do an unnecessary re-theme.

Seems like it's going to be a good while until they start, maybe they assume/hope they'll be back on the upswing financially by then.

You realize that people love the ride, not because of where it came from, but because they just you know..love the ride.

And that's the thing - most people, the vast majority probably, who ride Splash Mountain and enjoy it probably have no idea what it is based on. Their first exposure was to the ride itself and they don't think about any racial overtones from it because the ride just has cute, anthropomorphic animal characters.
