Anybody have a Wood Pellet stove?

We've been checking them out. We have two fireplaces - both gas. Sucks more heat an money up the flue that heats the rooms. We're thinking of replacing the smaller one with a wood pellet stove and perhaps put one in the basement as well.

Look at Harmon and only burn premium pellets. Best investment I ever made.

1 ton of pellts last me at 2 mos. I still burn my gas heaters but not as often

I have a wood stove and it was the best thing i ever bought. I got it last year and it probably has already paid for inself. The only reason that I didn't get a pellet stove was because I had no where to store the pellets. Our wood is outside covered up. Sometimes the store that you get the stove from will store the pellets but they usually charge a fee for it. Either stove, in my opinion is a great investment. Our other source of heat is propane and is harldy used. I can't say enough how happy I am that I have a wood stove.

We have had a pellet stove for about 10 years and really like it. The house gets very warm when we have the pellet stove running...we don't use the stove unless the temperature is below freezing. There is very little dust with the pellet stove & clean-up is pretty easy (DH does that!). I don't know about all pellet stoves & especially new ones, but the stove we have has an electric feeder on it...so, if the electric is out we can't use the stove. As another poster mentioned be sure to use the premium grade pellets.

Thanks all. We are not really looking at them for the money savings so much as just to get parts of the house warmer - and the seem to look like a nice addition to the room. Some of them look a bit complex - as in they will take a lot of upkeep because of the feeders and such. Having a place to store a ton of pellets is a consideration too.

My FIL installed a corn stove in their basement. It looks like an old fashioned wood stove. It really pumps out the heat and getting corn is easy (he just goes to the corn elevator-rural town) and buys a truck load--it is about $100 and will heat their basement all winter.

Consider this thread revived. If we got one of these pellet stoves, how does the heat get forced into other rooms when doors are shut? All of our bedrooms are upstairs and wouldn't our connecting master bedroom get colder than others since the air is not forced in there(from a vent?). We have a 3,000+ sq. foot home, with a basement, and sunroom behind the garage. Would we have to get a stove for the basement and the sunroom too?

Dumb question, can you hook up the pellet stove to your venting system so the heat can be pushed around that way? (((Wouldn't that be awesome!)))

Dumb question number two, can you burn wood pellet and then switch to corn? Or can you only use one heating source and that's it? Is the construction of a stove different for wood vs. corn?

Brilliant question, if you have a stove, what brand do you have and how do you heat multiple rooms?
