Anybody ever switch out the light bulbs in AKL room?

I'd love to stay at AKL, but it bothers me to hear how dim the lighting is in the rooms. I love to read at night and read a little every night, no matter how late it is or no matter how tired I am.

Has anyone ever brought a couple of brighter bulbs to switch out in the lamps - at least those by the beds?

Anyone there now who could look at the lamps and tell me if they state the maximum wattage allowed?

I personally have never done this...I don't find that it is too dim...of course I'm part vampire and do not like bright lights. ;)
But I have read in other places that folks have done it...I know on one website that I can't seem to remember at the moment...it actually suggests doing this if you prefer bright lighting...to me its a bedroom...which I don't like to be "glowing" ...the bathroom/sink area is well lite for getting ready.

I didn't find the lighting to be too dark on either of my stays there. And I tend to read a bit before bed too.

I would suggest buying one of those lights you clip onto your book for reading instead of bothering with changing out bulbs.

I have heard of someone switching the bulbs, but because it went out....not because of the brightness. Why they did it themselves.....I can't figure that out. I wouldn't, but in doing so....they got a discount/credit. Maybe there was a problem with the service.

Getting one of those book lights may do the trick. I don't know how you would safely get bulbs there, unless you are driving.

Good Luck! I envy you for staying there.

Hi :)

I agree with Lewski, get yourself one of those clip-on book lights, I use mine all the time and you can read without disturbing anyone trying to sleep with you having the light on.

Here is a link to see what they look like.

If I was going to uncscrew lightbulbs it would probably be at the Contemporary Resort so I wouldn't have to look at the garish decor

Our family found the rooms at AKL to be too dark. While we joked all week about changing the light bulbs, we never actually did it (although we were pretty tempted). I understand the effect they were going for with the dimmer lights and dark surroundings, but I am a light person, and it drove me nuts! In fact, I told DH the only way I'd stay at AKL again is if we brought our own light bulbs.:D

If you do, please make sure you switch it back before you leave... I like the lighting and don't want to get stuck in a bright room :teeth: . I definitely think it adds to the atmosphere!!!!

I would be concerned about overloading the outlet by putting in a bulb with too much wattage. I think the little booklite (I have several since I like to read in bed) might be the answer for reading. I not sure what you would do for general brightness, however. I had no problem with the amount of light in general.

This is too funny! On our wedding trip, we joked that our rooms just kept getting darker and darker. We started out at the GF, moved to WL, then to the very dark AKL. We record our daily recaps on our camcorder, and the room was so dark that, even with all the lights on, the camcorder wasn't getting our images. We had to go stand in the bathroom doorway, just to get enough light to record! I know it is an atmosphere thing, but I think they should have one mega-watt light, for people who like to be able to see! :)
Cheers!

You should call the front desk and see if they will change them for you. I would hate to try to travel with a few light bulbs in addition to everything else I have to take. I know you could buy some once you got there, but who wants to do that?

SHe didn't have enough light in the sink area to get ready in her opinion, so she changed the bulbs herself. At the end of the trip, she changed them back and used the bulbs at home.

I didn't have a problem with the dimmer lights, but she needs to be kept happy.

We both hate to bother people, that is why she did it herself. Besides we knew we could use the bulbs at home.

She also didn't know if the staff would change them and she was persistent to have brighter lights.
