Was cooking my Christmas dinner yesterday, just a small dinner for just me. I was roasting a turkey breast in the oven, i used a pyrex baking dish (only dish i have) but have used them before for turkey breast, no problem. About a half hr after i put it in the oven, i hear a strange noise coming from the oven, i open the oven and the pyrex dish had shattered!!Glass is all over the bottom of the oven !! good thing i had the turkey in a cooking bag, otherwise i would be afraid of glass being in it! In all my yrs of using pyrex baking dished, i have never had this happen.

Yes, it happened to me not too long ago. I was cooking chicken nuggets, and I had removed the pyrex dish from the oven and had set it on the counter on a large wooden cutting board. I turned around to pick up something else, and in that one second I heard a "breaking noise". I looked back at the counter, and my pyrex dish (not a new dish, not a dish with any defect of any type) had cracked down the middle. It didn't shatter, but still I couldn't feed the chicken nuggets to my family. I don't know but what some unseen glass had shattered upward.

I have no idea WHY such a thing would've happened.

It has not happened to me however I have heard of it. If you look it up and read the reports, it makes you want to throw out all of your Pyrex and upgrade to a new cookware system.

It happened to me also.

I took something out of the oven, and the dish shattered...more like exploded! Seriously there was shrapnel across the kitchen! Luckily no one was hurt by it but they easily could have been.

I am scared now every time I take something out of oven I kind of close my eyes and run, lol.

I remember it happening to my mom when I was younger. We were cooking stuffed shells and it shattered wiht the oven door open. Total shock !

Me too! I took a Pyrex dish out of the oven, and it exploded! There was glass everywhere.

Yes, it happened to us a couple years ago on Thanksgiving.

About 15 min before guests are to arrive, my husband is making gravy on the stovetop. A Pyrex Bowl of cooked mashed potatoes was on top of the stove - the burner was not on. All of a sudden a loud pop and our bowl of mashed potatoes had exploded.

It was a crazy scene. Cleaning up mashed potatoes, trying to salvage what I could, mopping the kitchen floor and cleaning hte walls and fearful of glass who knows where. I did give my guests a disclaimer on not to swallow anything that felt crunchy.

I went online afterwards and read that this happens alot.

Now, it's a funny Thanksgiving story to tell. When it happened it was scary. I haven't put mashed potatoes in Pyrex since.

There was a thread on the budget board a few months ago about this happening. I guess its not made like it use to be and happens more often than people think.

Geez I am so glad for the warning - I had not heard of this and I use a 13 x 9 pyrex dish and big pyrex bowl all the time. In fact, I had mashed potatoes in that bowl - in the oven to keep warm just a few days ago. No doubt when it happens to me I'll still be scared but at least now I'll now it is a fairly common occurrence

I seriously learn so much on the dis - you guys rock!

Does anyone know if it tends to happen to the pans/bowls that are used in the oven more than those which do not?

This happened to my husband too. I don't remember what was in the dish but he had it on the stove (it was off) and he turned around for something and the dish exploded into shrapnel size pieces. It was a baking dish so I'm not sure if it only happens with those or not.

Yep happened to me too. I took something out of the oven put it on top of the stove and went in the other room.. BOOM.. that sucker exploded! It left burn marks in my floor. I still find pieces of it ever now and then and it happened 2 years ago..

I agree!!

This happened to me a few months ago, and after hours of cleaning, I'm still finding little shards of glass in my oven. I have old-fashioned linoleum on my kitchen floor which now has some pretty bad burn marks on it when I dropped a big piece of glass when I was taking the broken mess out of the oven. At least something good came out if this...it's forcing DH to finally let me get a new TILED kitchen floor!

Pyrex=Potential trouble

It happened to me too. A few Thanksgivings ago I was making a turkey and a ham. The ham was in a pyrex dish on the bottom shelf (thank goodness) and the turkey was above it. I heard weird popping noise and peeked into the oven and the ham was sitting directly on the shelf and all the glass was on the floor of the oven. Luckily I am an aluminum foil user and most everything was protected. What a mess though!

I was taking my big bowls out of my cabinet last night to put dinner in and had a pyrex bread pan in my hand that I had to move out of the way. They barely tapped each other and the bread pan exploded there were shards everywhere! I had little flecks of glass all over my pants and the floor.

My DD's were only about a foot and a half away snapping green beans, but thankfully they were on a step stool.

I HATE Pyrex, it scares the poop out of me. That bread pan was the only piece I owned, and now that it's gone I will not be buying anymore.

It happened to me about 24 years ago in college. I had made a peach cobbler and put it on the stove to cool. It cracked into 4-5 pieces. It didn't explode but it sure was a huge mess.
