I thought my friends here on the budget board could help me out ;). We are looking to buy a used Suburban (2007 or newer) and it will be our first used car purchase...and from the looks of the low inventory out there (not sure why?)...looks like we'll end up buying from a dealer. My question is...when you look on auto trader and what not, and a dealer lists the price, how much wiggle room is there? I mean....I don't want to drive out to see a car if I know they aren't willing to take much less...ya know? Any help would be appreciated. We are having a really hard time finding what we are looking for in our price range. I'm thinking we should just wait until spring/summer when gas continues to go up...so hopefully prices will go down.

we always check the blue book value and this gives us an idea of how much wiggle room we have. We got an amazing deal when we bought our used full size suburban a few years ago from a dealer. Gas prices were high and and it was a kia dealer so they really wanted to get rid of it. I would say yes there is always wiggle room on a new or used vehicle--we've bought both and always haggled on the price.

Yes, there is generally some wiggle room. Do your research, so you know the price range the vehicle that you want is selling in. Then be prepared to walk. I've gotten more than one phone call from a dealership that has lowered the price when the vehicle was still sitting on their lot a few weeks later. And yes, the rising gas prices should lower the suv prices a bit.
