I need some help. UG - I have done this a million times but not in the last year so I am having memory issues - lol.

We have a new employee so I am trying to create her new user id.

I did smit user to create her name. Then instead of having to redo everything in her .profile - I just copied the .profile from my directory into her directory. I then went into her directory - did vi .profile to just change my username to hers - but I don't remember how to save and exit????

Also what's the command to assign a password to her user name when I'm done???

I used to be able to do this without even thinking about it.

ANYBODY???

Isn't it

:wq

am I right? It's been a longer while

:wq will do the trick. I use "vi" every day.

As far as assigning a password, you should be able to do that as superuser. Since you are using "smit", I assume you are doing this on an AIX system. It's been over 10 years since I've had to deal with unix management issues.

Perhaps you can type "man passwd" and see what shows up.

:wq didn;t work - am I supposed to type that in when I am done with my editing? I had to end up doing CTRL-X to get out of there.

Man passwrd did nothing except give me a blank line - shoot. I am going to have to call my "guys" for this one - lol!

hubby said you need to be out of insert mode and into command mode...so you need hit esc key then :wq
