Any thoughts on how to fix a broken window?

My son (age 3) broke a window in his room. It's a double-paned window, but only broke the inside pane. Is this something that we could possibly fix ourselves if we go to Home Depot or Lowes? Or do we have to hire a professional?

with being double paned,, i reccomend calling a pro it gets complicated taking the frame apart and re sealing the double pain.

And for goodness sake, don't put plain old clear glass back. Have STAINED GLASS installed! Something intricate and expensive!

I think the double paned ones have something special inbetween the 2 layers, don't they? Since the 2 layers are somehow connected with the edges that seal it tighly, you might have to replace the whole window half(I assume it is in 2 pieces-a double hung window) Homeowners Ins. would cover it.

call a professional.. it's easier to pay to have them repair it the right way!!

Within one month I had two broken windows from the LOUSY golf players on the course. The first one went right through both panes of glass. The second guy broke just the outside pane. Having them replaced. I asked the glass company if they could replace just the broken one rather than all of it. They said no. So I have to replace the entire window.

The two parts of the glass are integral parts, you cannot just replace one.

Sometime they put an inert gas inbetween, sometimes it's just plain vaccum.

So unless it's a newer window and the sash can tilt in/be removed or you have a friend that can come and remove the sash, you should call a professional.
