We will be staying at the Park Vue Inn in December and plan on going to Universal Studios for the day. There will be 6 of us (all adults) and the cost would be an extra $35 or so for the shuttle per person. Would it be better to rent a car in the morning from Downtown Disney and then return it in the evening? Or is the shuttle the way to go :)

I am not sure how much it costs to rent a car for the day, but 6 people at $35 a head for the shuttle sure seems like quite a lot and I can't imagine a car costing $210 for a day (but maybe I'm wrong). Look into Grey Line tours or other companies offering day trips. Sometimes the price of their day trip is only a few dollars more than the regular cost of admission. If not, I'd look at renting a car!

We considered using shuttle services for our trip next April, but with 6 of us, we decided against it and have a rental car reserved. We got a minivan for $305 including taxes and fees for a week. Our hotel doesn't charge a fee to park, so that won't cost anything additional. We just figured between the cost of shuttle service to and from the airport and then wanting to do at least one day trip to Hollywood or Universal, the cost of the minivan was going to be about the same price as the shuttles would be but it will give us more flexibility. With a car rental, we can go to the grocery store or to restaurants a little further from the park.

This is a great point. You should also factor in your airport transportation costs. If the price is right for a rental your entire stay, it couldn't hurt. Parking at PVI is free I believe.
