Any suggestions for vacuum cleaners?

I think mine burned up this morning. It's only about one year old and it went kaput already. I never liked it from the start. It was a Fantom bagless with Hepa filter. It was a pain and didn't seem to pick up very well.

I know I've seen alot of threads recommending the Dyson, but I cannot afford to buy one right now. I need something cheaper. I think I'm going back to one that uses bags, too. I have a dog and even though I vacuum every day it seemed like I was emptying the container 5 times every time I vacuumed. Any recommendations?

All I can say is don't get a Kirby. Unless they've changed them drastically in the past few years, I really don't like mine. It's WAY too heavy & a pain when you want to use the attachments. Unfortunately it'll probably last me forever, so I'll be stuck with it.

I have a newer Kirby, and though it is heavy, I LOVE it! I've had several vaccums and this one by far does the best job. I wouldn't use anything else.

Mieles are the BEST vacuum out there. I wouldn't own a different one if it were free.

I hated, hated, hated my hoover wind tunnel. I bought the Kenmore that Consumer Reports said was the one to buy and it is wonderful. I love it! It's the Kenmore Progressive with Direct Drive and it's red.

I have a new Kirby (about a month old or so) and I love it! It is heavy though, but since DH bought it, he has to drag it up the stairs and vacuum up there, then bring it back down.

i LOVE my Hoover Windtunnel self-propelled vac. We got a refurbished one off overstock.com for about $150 with $2 shipping. It's been great, and I vacuum all the time with it =0

We, too, couldn't afford the Dyson right now, so we bought the best we could instead =)

I wouldn't have anything but an Oreck.

No heavy sweepers for me.

Target and Sears always seem to have a deal on them.

I really hate my Dirt Devil. It is so heavy and so LOUD. You could even say it sucks. (sorry, couldn't resist)

Oops! I didn't catch the "Cheap" part! You are correct. Mieles are not cheap but they are so worth it!

Another Oreck vote. I just got it back home to day. I brought it in for its first annual free tuneup. They changed the belt, gave me an extra one just in case, changed the bag, oiled some stuff. All finished in one day and it is good to go and free. I think to keep up the warranty you have to do this annual tuneup thing. Get the XL 21 though if you can. It is designed to clear the bottom of cabinets perfectly.

The one i have is good for all floors, carpet, wood and tile. No more dust mopping wood floors. I was so tired of that shaggy dust mop. It is history.

I have to agree. I've had mine for 10 years and I want to upgrade soooo bad. Problem is, nothing ever goes wrong with it.
