Well, my two boys, my 10 year's old hair grows at a very fast rate, I say about a inch and 1/2 a month. I've been taking him to the hair stylist about every 5 weeks for a good cut cuz I don't want his hair too long.

On the other hand, my 4.5 year old son's hair has only grown 1 INCH from the early summer when it was a crew cut.

Is there any medical explanation that anyone has read or come across? It's the same with my 10 year old's fingernails, just grows so much faster.

Did the older child's hair ALWAYS grow that fast, even when he was 4? If not, I'd guess that the cause would probably be testosterone. For males, the same stuff that makes beards grow fast also makes all hair grow faster.

You might ask his father how old he was when he started to shave -- my DH was 12. Facial hair is actually one of the later stages of puberty for boys, but the testosterone levels creep up through the whole process.

There are blood tests that can be done to determine if hormone levels are normal or not; ask your ped if you are concerned.

Wish I could figure this one out, too. I'm still waiting for my DD3 to grow some hair. LOL!

Not sure what it is , but my DH has to get his hair cut every 2 weeks or he looks like a furry teddy bear..:rotfl: Luckily I am the one who cuts it or we would be spending some SERIOUS cash on haircuts. Mine grows pretty fast. I just donated 10-11 inches of hair to Locks of Love back in May of last year and it is almost long enough to donate that much again.

DD6's hair grows fast but DD2's hair takes a long time to grow...Makes you wonder what the deal is!!:confused3

I wonder this too. DS8 has always had fast growing hair. DS4 takes forever to grow. I thought maybe it had something to do with the texture of their hair. DS4 has baby fine hair, while DS8 has thick more coarse hair.:confused3

DS (11) has super fast growing hair and he always has. His grows on average an inch a month. He is currently growing his out to donate to Locks of Love. He started in September and already has 5 inches of usable length. At the rate of growth his hair, he should have the full amount needed by July. He has even been shaving his neck/chin area since age 3. We were concerned with his excessive hair growth, a sign of juvenile diabetes, and had his pediatrician check him out. His pediatrician ran all of the tests and said in DS's case, that it is just one of those things. He is just blessed to have fast growing hair and nails. DD (13) on the other hand, her hair never grows - less than a 1/2 inch in six weeks. But both kids have thick wavy hair.
Looking back at them at birth and as babies, DS had a head full of hair from day one and DD had what I concider a normal amount. She was no bald, but it was not thick and full like DS was.

It's actually part of their DNA. Same as hair color, height, etc. Hair also grows in cycles. If I remember correctly, I think your hair as a two year growth cycle--meaning it has a pattern (say 6 months fast, 3 months slow, 4 months fast, 5 months slow, 4 month fast, 2 month slow--whatever, it varies from person to person) that repeats each two years.

Thank you for your input --- I've learned something new!
