Any Regrets?

After reading many of the posts on this board, it appears as though most everyone is very happy with their decision to become a DVC member/owner. Just wondering, does anyone have any regrets? Do you wish you would have used your money elsewhere and just rented points when you wanted to visit WDW?

Also, do members get any discounts on the purchase of park passes? Are there any other perks?

Thanks,

John

I think the people who have decided to sell/have regrets would generally not visit this board so you have a biased population here.

Most would regret either not buying earlier when it was in the $40's per point.

You can get 10% off length of stay/park hopper plus passes

There are many perks around valet parking, meal discounts etc....

thanks

Definately no regrets here. We consider DVC to be one of the best things we have ever done! We have had years of use and plan many more years.

As for discounts. The park pass discount in effect is not a great one. 10% off uph. We usually buy APs so it doesn't benefit us.

My regrets....

Didn't buy in when we first looked at it. We watched the price rise and the free AP's disappear!!! (as well as many extra years)

I would do it again in a heart beat (maybe that explains my add-on tendancy)

I would have to say my only regret in our 2 year membership is booking a cruise on points and then having to cancel. You find yourself stuck with reservation points that expire at the end of your use year that cannot be used for the regular DVC resorts. I don't think I will ever book a trip on points outside the DVC "home" resorts again and go through this frustrating process of trying to use these points before they expire which means an extra unplanned trip this summer or forfeit the points. Of course I knew the rules when we booked the cruise so I can't cry over the spilled milk now. But I have learned a value lesson.

You asked about any regrets and that's the only one. We love our membership and our home resort of Hilton Head where we plan to spend most of our vacation time.

Oh yes one... We wish we bought in before we paid cash for our cruise. (we bought in while on the cruise.) We could have bought more points.

My husband and I agree that this is a great value, even with the intrest (we financed), taxes and dues... over the 40 yrs we will get our monies worth in spades!

Technically that perk was free LOS passes, not free AP's. For those who aren't aware, an early incentive to purchase in 1992-1995(?) was free LOS passes to the parks when you stayed in your DVC unit. This was good to Jan 1, 2000. We purchased in '93 at a much lower price/point than today and those free park passes for 6-1/2 years were a tremendous perk. The value of that alone practically paid for DVC.

All the other perks are just icing on the cake.

We've watched the prices of regular WDW rooms go up over the years while our DVC point system kept making our DVC resorts a better and better value each year. (Example: Suppose a WDW hotel room today is $200/night (($223 with tax) and Disney raises it 5% for the next year, then it goes to $234 (with tax) or a $11 increase. Meanwhile DVC raises our dues 5% so $4/point dues goes to $4.20/point. If you got a DVC villa that cost 20 points/night, the increase then was $4/night. ($80 (at $4.00/point) to $84 (at $4.20/point)). Remember, there are no taxes when using points.

Do the above for 10 years (remember everything compounds) and you'd find that hotel room goes from $200/night up to $363/night while the 20 point DVC room goes from $80/night up $130/night (20 points @ $6.52/point dues). For a 5-night vacation that hotel room now cost $1815 while your DVC villa cost you $650 based on dues costs along. Well what about the initial purchase? Just considering 5 days in that 10th year the difference will be $1165 between DVC and a WDW hotel. That's equivalet to $11.65/point ($1165 divided by 100 (20 points for 5-nights)).

And that's just in the 10th year alone. Do the calculation for 38 years, or 50 years, and see what happens. Even if you wouldn't stay in a $200/night room today, figure a $100/night room today and you still save considerably using DVC, AND you get much better accommodations.

(Just for fun, at 5%/year increases, in 35 years a $200/night WDW hotel room will be $1230/night (incl. taxes) while the DVC room is $440/night (no taxes), a difference of $790/night, or $3950 for 5 nights, or equal to $39/point in that 35th year alone.

In the 34th year that 5-day vacation difference would be equivalent to $37/point, and year 33 would be $35/point, so those 3-years alone calculate to a savings of $111/point or much more than the cost of purchasing points today. Of course that's calculated in year 2038 dollars so don't take the numbers too literally. Think of what $20 would do in 1968 compared to today. (In 1968 I purchased a brand new Volkswagen, from the dealer, for $1600. and I could never get $5 worth of gas in the tank. $20 was a lot of money. When I was in H.S. in the early '60's it was common to buy just a dollar's worth of gas. My after school part time job paid $0.85/hour, .....But, I digress......

Somewhere on these boards are threads that have actually compared the cost of dues for DVC and the costs of WDW hotels, and how they compared for the last 10 years. DVC comes out way ahead. Many members have done extensive calculations and report the break even point is in the 7 - 10 year range.

Regrets? Absolutely none.

We regret not stopping by one their kiosk(?) sooner to see what is what all about. We run away from those booths like the plague. Our regret is one - not buying sooner.

WDW has changed since I first abought into DVC in 95. I probably will stay away from WDW in the future. The major change has come in the attractions being geared to the thrill ride and taking away many of my favorite attractions. The other major change was predicted years ago when the addition of value hotels on property. I believe what has happen to WDW in this department is the same thing that happen to the airlines after deregulation, they went down hill, when 15 to 20 percent of the population flew in the airlines in was a pleasant experience, now that 80 percent or more fly we are treated like cargo. The same holds true with WDW it has gone down hill with the changes. I have no regrets however because when I bought in WDW was still a nice experience plus I got tickets to the park for free for my family and guests. I still love the weather down there and will spend January every year down there enjoying the sun and my DVC purchase but without the parks.

I have 2.

1. Not buying earlier.

2. Not more points at the time I did buy.

I'd have to say if I had any regrets, it would be that we didn't try to buy from the resell market and get HHI as our home resort rather than buy VWL. We absolutely love HHI and it is alot closer to our home than WDW and since my DW loves the beach and isn't the Disney nut I am, plus I love to play golf, I could see us going to HHI alot. As it is now, we'll still go there but with the shorter reservation window it will be harder to get ressies I'm sure. In fact, I may try to do an add-on at HHI thru resell.

If we (wife and I) had learned about DVC earlier we may have purchsed sooner. I'm still so excited about having a "home" at WDW, as well as the option of trading out, and doing some trips to other fine resorts that we may have never considered staying at. No regrets hers. (At least not yet - we've only owned for a little over a year)

Hi,

No regrets here. Just wish we had done it sooner!!

We are new owners, so it will take some time and a few trips to see if we have any regrets. But I can tell you that we dont have buyers remorse :)

We only bought 150 pts, and we did that for a few reasons. With the distance to Disney for us, we will take a longer vacation when we go as it is not practical to go for a long weekend. We can bank a years worth of points and go every other year with 300 pts.

Plus - as much as we love WDW, we also plan on doing golf vacations, visiting relatives etc.... so our purchase is not totally based on always going to WDW and touring the parks (although, it would be tough to go down without at least hitting one of them). We also gave my parents a week at SSR for their 40th anniversary. We plan on sending my sister and her husband down with our neice when she is old enough. It is something we want to share with our family as well.

We did not do it for an investment, we just love the WDW atmosphere, and wanted to make sure that we would get down there every so often and have great accomadations and a first class vacation.

Like some of the others,we should have done it sooner. We also stayed away from what we thought was just another timeshare.Loved the Boardwalk area, just could not afford to stay there two weeks at a time at $365 a night at that time for a studio. Finnally had time before going to the airport and stopped by the Boardwalk.Went into the DVC office. No hard sell. Took the info to a table on the Boardwalk, did some math, bought 204 points there and then. Got Home did more math that showed when all was said and done,a studio was costing us$65 a night, bought 100 more points. Last year bought 250 more on the after market so we could do the one bedroom everytime we came down. That one bedroom goes as high as $570 a night.Doesn't cost us 1/4 of that when you figure it out.But the value you get at a vacation club is lost if you use the points at a non vacation club resort or at most, not all other locations. It's just like they tell you at the sale,if you come home at least once every other year."It's a no brainer"And most of the people who you do see selling off are doing it because of family problems or money problems. It's a great deal, and other then the house we live in it's the best investiment we have ever made.

there was a similar thread two months ago about this.
below is the summary of the answer i posted back then:

my regrets are:
* rushing to buy an OKW resale, when my 1st choice was BWV. so i should've been patient and waited for the right BWV resale to come up. (moral = be patient and buy your 1st choice resort, don't settle for another.)
* when we bought OKW, we bought sight unseen. we had stayed at BWV before and loved it. we thought we would like OKW also. however, shortly after we bought OKW, we stayed there, and it turned out we didn't really like it. (moral = do not buy sight unseen. try to stay there first, but at the very least, go and tour the resort before buying.)

it is too soon for me to have any other regrets. only time will tell...

lately i have been feeling a bit unhappy about how DVC mgmt seems to treat DVC members... i worry that they think they've got our money already, so why bother treating us nicely (not many perks, overpriced "special DVC" events, not addressing issues directly when asked about them at condo meetings, etc). anyway...

Two regrets here:

1. Not buying when I first looked back in 1993/1994.
2. Buying a small Beach Club add on, instead of waiting out the Old Key West wait list. I suppose when my name comes up I will sell off that small Beach club contract...or maybe I should add more Beach Club points instead.

Make that just one regret then! ;)

No regrets at all. When we bought into DVC in 1999 it was $65 pt. I can imagine how the early(92-95) DVC members feel when they bought in at a lot lower prices.::yes::
