Just wondering if music from Puerto Rico is the same as music from Mexico, i.e. polka sounding, for lack of a better description!

There is a lady at the nursing home who is Puerto Rican and I wanted to make a CD for her, but I have Mexican music and I don't know if there is a difference or not. (Maybe a stupid question, I dunno!)

Salsa (think Marc Anthony), boleros and merengue. For an old lady I would choose La Lupe, Danni Rivera, Sophie, Daniel Santos. That's all I can think for now. :)

It's diffrent from mexican music, but I don't think she'll mind.

Mark Anthony is PR and they call him the Salsa King. Maybe she would like some Salsa music. It is a very nice gesture. My father was in a nursing home and people there treated him like family.

You could also get something by Tito Puente or Celia Cruz. The Mexican music you are thinking of I think is Mariachi. Salsa, merengue, or bachata music would be a nice gift:D

Mexican music and PR music is very different. Celia Cruz would be good. I will have to ask my DH what type of music he would recommend. :teeth:

Lol! I've never heard that comparison!:p

I'm embarrassed to admit I wouldn't be able to identify specifically Puerto Rican music but I do love SALSA in general!

Yes to Celia Cruz and Oscar D'Leon. And Tito! Try the Buena Vista Social Club sountrack, as well.

I'm pretty sure the "polka-sounding" music you're refering to is Tejano music, purely a Mexican style. We live right on the Mexican border, but have recently also had an influx of Puerto Ricans (primarily in Medicine). I'll ask any I run into today.

I will agree with Simba's Mom... what you are referring to is most likely Tejano music. I am not too keen on that but do listen to very few artists. I'm sure Sherry sent you a lot of good info, but the first style that comes to mind for me is Salsa. Marc Anthony is a good modern salsa artist to check out. I also think Tito Puente or Celia Cruz first though, when I think Puerto Rican music. One of my favorite modernized groups though is DLG... it's salsa-reggae (cool stuff).
