Any problems with the little tiny bugs called "no-see-ums" at VB?

I've had good luck with SKin So Soft Bug Guard Plus with spf 30. I've had it for a few years so I'm not sure they still sell it.

Maybe the bugs don't like old SSS! ;)

We there a week. Just returned last friday. We used something with deet and it did not phase the little critters at all. They were horrible!!!!!!!!!

I got back last Saturday. After HHI and VB, no problems with bites. We left VB on Friday morning and stayed at VWL for one night. Friday morning we were at Blizzard Beach until noon. We went to VWL for a 3 hour wait to get our room. I stared at the VWL roof for a good part. Went to to dinner at Boma's and back to the room.

Saturday morning we found we were bit up good.

1) Is there some time delay in noseeum's bites appearing? We don't know when we got bit. I doubt we got bit at Blizzard beach. We got there at 8:15 AM. I was up at 5:30 AM at VB. Maybe that was when I got bit?
2) After a week, I still got the red bumps but are slowly disappearing.
3) man, they itch.
4) At first, I thought they were bed bug bites at VWL but we not see any bed bugs.
5) Luckily my daughter did not get bit and she slept in the same bed at VWL as my wife and my wife was bit up too. So, that discounts the bed bug theory.

We almost made it through the week but it seems like the noseeums got us at VB at 5:30 AM when we were loading up the car.

we just got back today from vero, the bugs were HORRIBLE!!!! you can now play connect the dots on my legs. :) they were really bad sitting at the pool at 8am-9:30ish and then in the evenings. we had regular bug spray, apparently that just attracted them to me.the lady in the gift shop recommended the deep woods off. On the plus side, the hydrocortisone works really well to stop the itchy feeling. :) we had a great time even with the bugs. :)

That's how they got me last time I was there! They are also selective about who they bite.

I just returned yesterday from 9 days at Vero.

We were on the top floor of villa building twelve, in 1242 and 1243 (because that's the northernmost building near the campfire area, we had incredible sea views, and consequently spent plenty of evening time outside on our balconys). We had Skin So Soft Bug Guard Plus with us (yes, it's still available, I got it on Amazon) but my wife and kids didn't like the smell, so they generally didn't put it on. Therefore, we were a good "test case" (Dad used the bug stuff the first few days, the rest of my family never did).

Bottom line: we wouldn't have even known about the "no see ums" if I hadn't read about them here, because they never bothered us at all.

- We were at the pool to grab a table at "rope drop" (8 am ) almost every day - no bug issues whatsoever during that early morning period.
- We were outside in the early and late evenings plenty of times, and again, no bug issues whatsoever.
- Also did campfire twice during the stay, and I didn't see anyone on either evening complaining about the bugs.

Bottom line: the bug thing seems to be very subjective. Maybe the insects are only attracted to certain types of people/skin? :confused3 (for what it's worth, my family is relatively fair, wife and kids also have red hair).

Studies have not born out the benefit of the Avon product and my GM was an Avon Manager for 30 years.
Dean is right, although the studies I've seen say it works but not as long as commercial repellants. I'm always a little leery of studies like that and would sorta like to know who the studies were funded by. :rolleyes1

OTOH, I've been using Skin So Soft for 30 years and it works for me! I mix Skin So Soft Bath Oil 50/50 with water and put it in a spray bottle.

I typically use SSS at Everglades National Park and have good results in a part of the park that sometimes has pesky mosquitoes, but neither the AWFUL ones nor noseeums. I've used it a few times in areas with Black Salt Marsh Mosquitoes (the BAD ones) and had good results, but I usually use industrial strength Cutters in those areas.

Avon also has a Skin So Soft sunblock (several flavors) which contains regular repellant. I don't like it either as a sunblock or as repellant.

DW brought home Cutter Advanced wipes over the weekend. I think it's going to do the trick. Almost to single digits. :)

what months are they not an issue at vb? we have the opposite in nj - morris county. the mosq. "i call them the town bird. man do they get big and hungry. :wave2: party: "

Bringing this thread back in hopes that anyone can answer if the No See Ums are worse/better at different times of the year.
We're going next March (end of the month) and will definitely bring protection, but would like to know people's experiences with these bugs in March.

Thanks!

I was scratching up to 1 week after we got home. They are nasty little bites. I used Advanced cutter spray, but obviously not enough.

My husband didn't believe they are real, until a CM referred to them.

Use the spray on the kids definitely.
