Any nurses, med techs or moms that could help?

As we are getting ready to be hit by the hurricane, my son has picked up something. We are thinking it's a head cold. What's got me, i've never seen before in any of my 3 kids. His eyes are all goopy, all over his lashes, in the corners... I wipe it away, some just won't come off, but then more shows up. Is this part of a head cold? Is it something else? I've given him tylenol cold, is there anything else I should do before we get stuck by this hurricane. Do you think it's contagious? Knowing our luck it probably is. During Frances last year all my kids and nephews came down with Roseola. And then during Jeanne they ALL caught broncialitis. Anyway, any help would be appreciated!

Sounds like pink eye and yes it's contageous. You will need anitbiotic eye drops from the doctor.

Definitely sounds like pink eye. Sometimes colds can settle in the eyes too and cause the goopiness. He needs antibiotics.

I've had pink eye before... and this seems different? His eyes aren't pink at all. It's just the green goop??? Would that still be pink eye? I have no idea what to do being Sunday and 12 hours from being hit by the hurricane. Think the doctor would call in something that I could just pick up? I know how contageous pink eye is... aye!!!

That sounds like pink eye -- conjuctivitis. Very contagious. Needs antibiotic drops from doctor to cure.

Goop, especially green goop, definitely indicates an infection.

I agree with the others- try to get into a doctor while you can to get treatment started.

Yep, could still be pink eye. Can you call the doc & possibly get a perscription. I know they like to see the kids but there is the "small" matter of the impending hurricane. If Doc can't/won't perscribe a quick trip to a walk-in clinic might be in order. I know you have enough to do. Stay safe. :grouphug:

Goop is almost always pink eye.............unless an eye injury, but if he woke up with it and it's in both eyes and continuing, I'd definitely say you've got conjunctivitis. Have to take him to the dr. for antibiotic drops if it's already that bad. My son had that so often in elementary school that I got to where I could recognize it very quickly (well, I teach too, so saw it plenty), and bathe his eyes 6-8 times a day with a clean washcloth each time, washing hands every time, and get it to go away, but once the goop is really going, you've got to get the drops. Sorry.

I get the green goop in my eyes with every sinus infection. While his may be pink eye, just because he has the goop doesn't mean it is pink eye.

Call your doctor and see what he recommends.

Good luck!

Another vote for calling the Dr. before the storm hits.

Or go to a walk in care place.

I would want to have medication in case the power goes out.

Good luck and I hope he feels better soon. :grouphug:

I bet it's just caused by the cold and sinus drainage. I would stick with a decongestant until you can get to the doctor.

DS had the goop with a sinus infection. He needed antibiotics. He always needs antibiotics. Our doc once gave us a powdered form that we could mix ourselves in case of emergency, and it came in handy during Charley last year.

Agree that this sounds like conjunctivitis. My son had the same symtoms last month. I would suggest trying to get him to a walk in/urgent care clinic before the storm hits. Doctor will probably prescribe antibiotics - both oral and drops for the eye.

Stay safe.

I called after hours at our office. They are calling in eye drops to the pharmacy...

Contact your doctor. It very well could be simple pinkeye, but then again, he could have a viral infection called Adenovirus. Adenovirus can produce cold like symptoms, diarrhea, pinkeye, and more. We have seen quite a bit of Adenovirus in the Atlanta area over the last 2 weeks. Maggie

I agree. Antibiotics aren't always called for with runny eyes. It could be viral conjuctivitis. The only way for the doctor to tell is to do an exam with fluorescein strips and see if there are any infiltrates in his eye. However, I know this isn't a possibility for you right now.

Go ahead and use the drops, make sure you keep his washcloths and pillows away from the rest of the kids, and try to keep his toys separate as well. I'd keep some antibacterial scrub nearby to keep his little hands cleaned after he rubs his eyes.
