I'm alittle frazzled and cant figure this problem out. Can anyone help with a kids math problem for a good friend? Also, can you give an explanation how you arrived at the answer? Thanks in advance :)

EFGH

x 4
________
HGFE

E = _____
F = _____
G = _____
H = _____

since the product has only four digits, 4 * E cannot be larger than 10
so E is either 1 or 2
But 4 * H ends in E and so E must be even
Therefore E = 2

2FGH
x 4
_____
HGF2

Since 4 * H ends in a 2, H is either 3 or 8.
If H were 3, the product would have to have a digit in the ten-thousands since 4 * 2 = 8 and the only way for the thousands digit in the product to be 3 is if there were something to carry.
So H is 8

2FG8
x 4
_____
8GF2

4 * G + 3 ends in F
And the result of multiplying 4 * F plus any carry from the tens place multiplication must be less than 10. So F must be 0 or 1 (2 has already been used)
F cannot be 0 because 4 * G is even therefore 4 *G + 3 is odd and 0 is not an odd number.
F must be 1

21G8
x 4
_____
8G12

4 * G + 3 ends in 1
4 * G ends in 8. G is either 2 or 7. 2 has been used. G is 7.

2178
x 4
_____
8712

This checks out
E = 2, F = 1, G = 7, H = 8

Now, why did you go and totally blow my impression of you???? I would have believed absolutely anything said from now on!! I'm so disappointed! :sad2:

I was going to take the easy way out and say E,F,G,and H=0 ;)

Actually it is a math question for a 4th grader.

Mine's in 3rd grade and is getting alot of wacky questions like this on her "Math Superstars" stuff - kinda like a math club. I let her sign up thinking it would help her with her math, which she typically struggles with. Figured the extra practice would help. Holy cow!! DH and I sit and look at these worksheets and think, "Wow! I couldn't pass 3rd grade!!"

Well if you were a good stalker then you'd know that I'm dumb as a rock in math. :rotfl:
