Many years ago, my dad gave me a pair of diamond earrings. I wore them to my wedding, but not much since then because they are painful to put in and remove. The post is thicker than most of my other earrings. Dad gave my sister an identical pair and her posts are also very thick. I would love to be able to wear them more often, but they always end up causing trauma to my ears that takes a few days to heal.

Is my only option to get the diamonds transferred to new settings with new posts? Or is there a way to shave down the existing posts to make them thinner? I plan to take them to a jeweler this weekend, but wanted to know what my options might be so I can ask the right questions.

I don’t think there is any way to shave down the existing posts. A jeweler may be able to cut off the thick post and solder a new, thinner post onto the current setting. Otherwise, I think you will need to replace the setting.

I'd take the earrings to a reputable jeweler and do what they suggest. They should be comfortable to wear. I hope you get to enjoy them regularly soon.

I know what you mean about thicker . Mine have screw on backs and the posts so the posts have grooves. They are that way so it is harder to lose them .

I don’t wear mine much either.

Yes and no. I had the same issue on a pair of screw backs my mom gave me. My local jeweler was able to keep the setting but cut off the thick post and solder on a new thinner one without the screw back.

There is likely a reason the diamonds are in a heavier setting. If they are studs it is probably due to their size. Your holes will eventually be able to accommodate them comfortably if you wear them more frequently.

That's a good point. I hadn't thought about diamonds needing a heavier setting. The stones are 1/4 carat on each ear, so not overly large.

I put them on a few months ago and planned to leave them in for several weeks. I was hoping my piercings would eventually stretch a little to make putting them in easier. The problem was that putting them in actually scraped my ears and caused them to bleed. I tried to leave them in, but there was swelling around them and having the back secure enough to keep them on really hurt. I finally had to take them out and put in some smaller posts until my ears healed.

DH and I just had our 35th anniversary the other day. My dad gave my sister and me diamond earrings on the Christmas before my wedding. My mom said he decided it was his last chance to get them for me without being accused of trying to show up my husband! :rotfl:

We're planning to take my wedding ring to a jeweler to get some modifications made. I'll take the earrings in at the same time and see what can be done.

FWIW an ear cleaning solution will help com the swelling and/or inflammation. Good luck!
