My son just got a leading part in a school play. He's the Centipede in James and the Giant Peach.

I need to make a costume in a week or so - Any suggestions?

What supplies would I need - this centipede has 40 legs...... can I make 40 legs fit on a 4'8" body? HELP! :sad2:

Suare you can! Start with a pair of sweats in the appropriate color, and start adding the legs. Centipedes have really skinny legs, so use smething like coated wire attached to the underside and stuck thru the sweats. It will look funny...but centipedes look funny too.

Okay. Good suggestions.

What do I use for feet? What color is a centipede? Can I get wire or Pipe cleaners at Wal-Mart or MIchaels? Do I buy a lot of dolls black shoes and put them on the pipe cleaners? In the production, the centipede wears boots!

That would be too cute! You could make little black shoes out of sculpey a bit cheaper than buying doll shoes. They don't have to be fancy. You could use the thicker pipe cleaners (Michael's might have a better selection). To get them to stick out, you might need a bit of foam board (a strip) on the inside to fasten them to. Otherwise they may all just fall down. Tie a fishline to them so that when your son raises his arm, the whole row of feet move.

I love this stuff! Thanks for asking about it!

Yes- Wal-mart has pipe cleaners in the crafts section. I would use black pipe cleaners, and green suit- centipedes can really be all kinds of colors, I looked at pics at www.whatsthatbug.com/cent.html. Then, instead of doll shoes (which would prob be expensive for 20 pairs), I would try to model some out of model magic and paint it black. It's by Crayola and in the craft dept. too, by the kid stuff. Dries hard- You could shape boots, then stick in the pipe cleaners, and let boots dry, then paint them black.

i would use pipe cleaners for legs and craft foam for feet. Just cut it out in the desired shape and attach to pipe cleaner.

Okay -

So far I need a green sweatshirt and green sweat pants.

I need to buy (at least) 38 large pipe cleaners and attached them with foam strips? (Is that right?)

Then, magic stuff or something to make the shoes?

I'm very lame when it comes to crafty stuff. Can you supply me with a bit more detail?

Thank you.

BTW - I love the fish line idea!

Thank you for thinking of more cost effective ways than doll boots - I just need more info to make sure I buy the right item.

My son was just in this play at the local theater (he was a shark)...The Centipede's costume only had eight legs and at the end they had socks with laces so they could take them off and put them back on. I don't really think you really need 42 leggs to get the point accross of what he is. They used overalls and sewed "legs" and attached with fishing wire to make them move. We have some pictures if you want to see what the heck I'm talking about!!
