Any idea how much it costs to remove a very large tree?

We bought a "new" house (it's 60 years old but it's new to us!) last year. There is a HUGE maple tree in the backyard. It's got to be as old as the house, if not older. Last year it looked fine.

This year, well, it's the end of may and it hardly has any leaves. I've heard of late "bloomers" but something about this tree is just off. We're affraid it's dieing. We've got a tree doctor coming out to look at it and tell us what's going on.

If worse comes to worse and we can't save it, we'll have to have it removed. It's waaaaay to big to do it ourselves, plus there are power lines and our neighbors yards and homes to deal with.

Obviously every situation is unique, but I have no idea what something like this can run. Anyone that has experiance with this, how much can something like this cost?

Seriously, I don't know. Have you checked your area Yellow Pages and have somebody give you an estimate? If it's like around here, if the tree is in or near a utility easement, your handy-dandy utility board may be of assistance for a good price (free to you).

My grandmother had a 125ft oak (about 4 feet diameter trunk) removed and the stump dug up and fill dirt brought in. It ran around $1,500.00!

It is near an easment, the easement is for the telepone/power lines. Our neighborhood was designed so that the telephone/powerlines run between the backyards, going all the way down the block instead of out in the front yards near the street. I never thought to call ComEd! We haven't gotten any estimates yet, the tree doctor is comming this week to tell us what, if anything is wrong with the tree and what we'll need to do about it.

We have a 55ft pine tree that needs to be removed (not near any power lines) and the cheapest estimate we got for its removal (not including stump removal) is $1100

We had to have a very large old elm removed last year. With stump removal it was $1100. I spent another $350 to have all the other trees in the yard sprayed (it was carpenter ants & some type of beetle that got the elm) and trimmed.

There were 3 large trucks in my yard at one point, but they put the fence back & managed to do all the work without ruining my lawn.

Well it is near power lines and neighbor houses so they will have to take every branch down by the bucket.
I am including stump removal.

My bet is going to go 2,200.

We paid $2500 to remove a very large cottonwood about a year ago. It takes several people and lots of climbing to take a large tree down in a residential neighborhood.

A really big tree in my area would probably be between 3 and 4 thousand dollars. We're talking major long-established enormous tree, not a big pine. I have a tree in my backyard that I'd eventually like to lose, but it will be at least 2500 - 3000 dollars so I'm holding off!!!

Our landlord had to have one removed from our backyard last year. The thing was 'dropping' killer limbs! However, I think it only cost him about $800.00 to have it removed. Of course that may be because not as many limgs were left on it.

What a timely thread. We just had a very large tree removed yesterday. The quote we got from a tree removal was $1800.00. However last fall we had a load of firewood delivered. We asked the guy how much he would charge to remove the tree and cut it up for firewood. He gave us a quote of $75.00.
So after the huge quote above, DH called him and asked if he would still do it for $75.00. Yes, I know, it would have destroyed our home had it fallen the wrong way. I was nervous. But DH made the arrangements and was supposed to meet the man yesterday afternoon. But when DH got home, the tree was already gone, the firewood cut and it is the cleanest tree removal I ever seen. I am soooo happy with the results, and it only cost us $75.00

It cost our neighbor about $50,000, not counting being out of work for 6 months and what insurance paid. Of course, he decided to do it himself because the $3,000 quote was too expensive.

We had a large tree cut last year. $2500. It would have been an extra $400 for stump removal, but we decided to live with the stump. Part of the expense was because the tree was very close to the house.

I called 4 tree companies for estimates and they were all within this price range.

We have 2 more trees we'd like to have cut, but it's so expensive.

Last year my dad had a lumber company come in and clean out several trees on the back of his property. Because lumber is in such high demand, he was paid pretty well for them. You might want to check into it

This tree is huge, so I'm guessing the higher quotes would be the better ones to plan on. $2000 to $3000!

Hopefully the tree doctor will tell us it's a simple problem with a simple (read: cheap) solution. I really don't want to cut the tree down anyway, it's a nice tree, I like it! It's they only big tree we have in a neighborhood that has a million well-established trees, we'd stick out like a brown spot on a green lawn!

Check first with your utility company. One of our trees (HUGE maple) was so close to the road/powerlines that the power company removed it, free of charge. It just depends on where it is situated. In our case, it was better for the power company to remove it than to keep needing to trim it every year. (they are responsible for trimming close to powerlines)

Good luck, if you have to pay for it yourself...it will be pricey.

We had a very old and tall oak tree that had power lines going through the branches. It was also located close to our house. We asked for an estimate from a company that was cutting down trees for a neighbor and we were told $2000. We couldn't afford it at the time. About a year later another neighbor was having a bunch of trees removed. The workers had to use a right away beside my house. I just happened to be home one day when they were there and asked them about the tree. The owner of the company said if it was a cash deal he would charge me $800 and would also remove a magnolia tree beside the house that was ruining our roof. He also wanted one of the logs. I knew he was going to sell it but I didn't care as long as the tree was gone. There was still enough wood left over for my brother to use to heat his house.

Mine about 1000 or so - but since ligthening had struck the tree my insurance company paid for a portion to have it removed since there was the danger of it falling on the house

Our power company took down 2 dying trees out back at no charge since they were in the power lines, and while they were digging out the stump from the front yard, I had them do those stumps too
