Any good alternatives to DCL?

I'd love to plan a 4-night cruise for next year's school break (March 2008).

But I think a 4-night Wonder cruise is out of our price range. I got a quote of $4k for the 4 of us (cat 6).

What other options are there from Port Canaveral? It looks like the only 4-night RCL option is on the Sovereign of the Seas which I have heard is pretty old and shabby. Has anyone been on the Sovereign lately?

Thanks.

RCL has some really nice 5-night options from Ft. Lauderdale, if you are willing to travel a little further south. You are correct about the Sovereign being the only 4-night option. The Mariner sails 7-nights and that is a relatively new ship - 2003, I think. My dh and I have sailed RCL 3 times with #4 being this Oct. We have loved all our trips, but haven't sailed on the Sovereign.

The Celebrity Century recently got a huge expensive makeover (it looks fabulous) and is now doing some shorter cruises out of Miami: 4- and 5-night cruises. I would check it out. Celebrity is a terrific cruise line. :thumbsup2

You are correct that the most comparable itinerary from Port Canaveral is the Sovereign. The Sovereign underwent an extensive "revitalization" drydock in December 2004 that was filmed and shown as a multi-part mini-series on both Discovery Channel and Travel Channel. My impression is that the ship is in very good condition, and that was based on my impressions comparing the Sovereign in 1/07 with the Radiance in 11/06--I did not feel a drop off in caliber of ship, and there was just a 5 week span in between.

That said, there are some significant differences. 1) Stateroom size. Tiny on Sovereign, at 122 feet for std. oceanview, vs. 226 for a cat. 9. We had a Jr. Suite, at 245 ft. plus a balcony, the room is really like a cat. 6. 2) No alternate restaurant. Newer RCI ships, like Mariner, have a Portofino or a Chops, filling the same role as Palo, but not on Sovereign. 3) Price--as OP has noticed. We have pretty consistently been more impressed with RCI's Windjammer Buffet restaurants vs. Beach Blanket/Topsiders, though we give the edge to DCL for the dining in the rotational resturants. Though a smaller ship at approx 73,000 tons, the sovereign, when full, holds about 2600 passengers! And just two hot tubs. Other threads compare other differences, such as entertainment and children's programs between the two lines.

Sovereign can be a very nice experience. No, it is not a Disney cruise, but it is a very nice cruise--but the details will be different. If it fits your budget--and plan on 2 staterooms on the sovereign, then consider it.

We have also done a 4 night Enchantment cruise from Ft. Lauderdale. Another revitalized ship, this is the one that was cut in half, and had an extra middle section added in 2005. We cruised on her 2/2006. Rooms are larger than the sovereign, though still not the same size as DCL. This one does have a Chops. No basketball court (DS's favorite--Sovereign does have a court, FYI). Typically, no private island on the Enchantment itineraries. RE: private islands--coco cay on RCI is perfectly nice, but Castaway Cay wins, for the disney touches and being able to dock and walk on and off w/o tenders.

There may be fewer families on Sovereign or Enchantment except for peak holiday weeks when school is out, but neither was a booze cruise with anyone out of control or unpleasant in any way. Experienced large group booking on both ships, FWIW, so for kids a somewhat different atmosphere--but plenty of family activities on sovereign, perhaps even a bit more than on Enchantment. Enchantment also offers the grownups a covered pool solarium in case of cooler weather during your cruise.

Have you considered checking the prices for something w/o a balcony on DCL to see the pricing? We've always loved our cat. 8's, and even having had balconies before find no problem in going to a cat. 9 for our upcoming Wonder cruise. In any event--in doing a price comparison, plan on 2 rooms for sovereign, and very possibly the same set up on enchantment.

My son and I will be on a 4-night cruise out of Miami in March 2008 on Majesty of the Seas. Paying $399/pp was much easier to swallow than $1000/pp for a DCL cruise -and that's for the least expensive inside on both. Majesty just came out of a multi-million dollar 28-day drydock in Feb., and from the photos I've seen - she looks wonderful. I looked at longer cruises out of Ft. Lauderdale/Miami on RCI - but didn't want to spend much more. Doing a Monday-Friday cruise gives us time to spend the weekends before and after doing fun things in FL.

I chose Majesty out of Miami rather than Sovereign out of Port Canaveral because Majesty goes to Key West and Sovereign has a sea day. I was also interested in the more recently refurbished ship.

We did the 3 night in November during our fall break. We really enjoyed it. My boys 10 and 15 loved their kids and teen clubs. They actually said they had more fun than on our 4 night Wonder cruise 4 years ago. But I don't think they really remembered that much about it. And neither one wanted to spend any time at all in the clubs on the Wonder. What a difference this last time. We are sailing on the Magic in 2 weeks and I can't wait to see what they think. I know they are going to have a ball! I do agree about the cabin size, we booked two side by sides for around $120 more. It was well worth it!

Are you sure you need a Cat. 6? Try to get a Secret Porthole Room, which is basically a Cat. 8 room with a Cat. 10 price. The Disney rooms are considerably bigger than RC's standard rooms. It's not a balcony, but you do have a slightly obstructed oceanview room. Plus with a 4 day, are you really going to be in the room that much? If you must have a balcony, I'd go with Royal Carribbean. They also have a cruise ship out of Tampa, but I don't know if it's a 4 day.

If you are willing to go to Fort Lauderdale, I highly recommend teh Caribbean Princess. Sailed on her last week and it was fabulous. We were a group of 8 of varying ages and interests, and everybody loved ths ship and what it had to offer. Out of 13 0r 14 cruises, this was one of my favorites.

Wow! Thank you all for your great input! It really helps me decide what to try for our family.

Going to another port (Fort Lauderdale or Miami) isn't an option I want to consider for a few years yet. Our youngest is 2 and just the thought of a 3+ hour drive gives me a headache. He does NOT travel well (yes, we're "the" family in the back of the plane with the screaming kid). I'd rather shoot my foot than voluntarily ride in a car for 3+ hours with him.

That's one reason why I was looking at a Cat 6 room with DCL. We went on a 4-night Wonder cruise in 2004 and had a Cat 7 (Navigator Veranda). Our other son was 5 at the time and that room worked out wonderful for us. He didn't want to go to the kids clubs, so we did spend quite a bit of time in the cabin (naps, etc). Having the veranda made a big difference for my husband and I to be able to enjoy the cruise. With an inside room we would of been stuck in there for hours during nap time with no escape. At least with the Cat 7 we could go sit out on the veranda.

I figure next year our youngest will be in close to the same boat (pun intended): spending quite a bit of time in the cabin. Naps, early bedtime, etc. I'm not willing to take them on a cruise if we don't have a Cat 7 or better.. I'd go nuts.

I like the idea of getting two rooms on the Sovereign - I'll have to price that out. Do they have connecting rooms?

Thanks.

I'm looking at this cruise! How were the pools> Did you have any kids who used the kids clubs??

Carnival has alternating 3 and 4 nighters out of Canaveral, and alternating 4 and 5 nighters out of Jacksonville as well. Never been on them, but they do offer the itineraries you desire.

I know that you're looking for a 4 night itinerary, but we (me, DH, and DD3) took a 7 night Western Caribbean on Royal Caribbean's Mariner of the Seas last September and we loved it! The ship is gorgeous and we could hardly pull our daughter out of Adventure Ocean! We are, however, going on a 3 night Disney cruise (this time with 18 month-old brother too) on March 15th and can't wait! :cool1:

If you do decide to go on Sovereign instead, let us know how it is please.
