I've had tinnitus for over three years now. Other boards that I've checked on the internet say, "Hang in there, it will get better." Well, it's not. I spent Friday morning at working checking out the rate of suicide for tinnitus sufferers. I'm at my wits end.

My ENT doc had me try a new med, imipramine, and now it's worse. I'll be calling him this morning to see what my next step is.

I use a noise machine at night, which helps a little. I've cut out caffeine.

What about you? Is anything working?

Thanks,
Jen

My comes and goes and I think it is due to hearing loss. I have never done anything about it though.

Sorry you are at your wit's end, hugs sent for some relief!

Have you tried playing around with your diet? I know some people with a gluten intolerance can really suffer with tinnitus. I'm sorry you are dealing with that.

I don't know if it will help you at all or not, but one of my co-workers is a long time sufferer of tinnitus. Hers is a constant roaring sound in her ears. She has Menier's disease and had ear surgery many years ago. That is when the tinnitus started up really bad. She was miserable for years. A year ago she saw a new doctor and he actually prescribed her amitriptyline. Its an anti-depressant and she takes a low dose of it each night and it has really helped her a lot. It didnt' go away but it did make it quieter (if that makes sense). I can't say that it will help everyone, but maybe its worth exploring with your ENT. Also, she recently got hearing aids. She did have some hearing loss because of her menier's disease. The hearing aids have made a world of difference as well. I can't say for certain if this will work or not, but I have read that acupuncture may be able to help tinnitus. If you that miserable, it may be worth checking out as well.

I have started having some problems lately with TMJ and I've noticed that I tend to now hear a high pitch frequency in my head when my surroundings are very quiet. I tend to hear the sound more out of my right ear, which is the side most of my TMJ problems are on. My dentist assures me its the TMJ causing it. I still plan to check with an ENT to make sure they also think its the cause. I don't seem to have any hearing loss yet. Mine hasn't gotten so bad yet that its truly bothering me. I hope it stays that way!

Good luck.

I have tinnitus due to my allergies, so it's different. It began this time last year when I got an ear infection. Turns out, if my nose gets clogged up, my Eustachian tubes get clogged up. It's especially bad for me because I am completely deaf in my left ear. So I've begun immunotherapy (drops), and have been taking nasal sprays, antihistamines, etc. Still ringing. But it's quieter.

I hope you can find a solution that works. Just keep trying. :hippie:

My daughter developed this last nov in both ears. She has lost all hearing in her left ear, and most in her right. It's a very long story, but in the end she has Lymes disease. She is getting treatment now. She is only 1 month in. Sunday she said the ringing stopped for about 2 minutes and she could hear, then it came back. I am hoping the treatment works. You have to see a Lyme literate DR. I have been all over trying to find help and am thankful to her DR. I have had some horrible experiences. Even had a couple Dr's tell me my daughter was faking!!!!!! Ugh. Good luck and I hope it gets better soon. I can not even imagine having to live like my daughter has.

Me. My ears have been ringing since 2003. I got an ear infection (my only one) and the ringing has been going on since then. My ENT said that's "very unusual" as a result of an ear infection, but... Lucky me.

My ENT basically just said "use ambient noise to drown it out" and "you'll get used to it." I use a wave machine at night and an air cleaner (for white noise) during the day and, for the most part, it doesn't bother me too much. But sometimes it gets really loud and annoying. I do not know why it is louder at other times.

It's really frustrating sometimes... and I'm sorry you're dealing with it.

Funny to come across this post, as I began having problems a couple of weeks ago. I have an appointment with an ENT next week and hoping to get some relief. My problems seem to relate to my heart rate.. I can only hear it when my heart is racing.

My husband has suffered from tinnitus since he was a boy. Literally as long as he can remember (he is 37 and remembers as far back as being 5 and hearing the ringing) none of the ENTs that he has seen has been able to help. He has had to get use to it and deal the best he can.

:grouphug: No advice but sending you a hug because that sounds completely miserable. Hope you find some relief soon!

I have had tinnitus since August of last year. It drove me crazy at first. I could just barely function. I went to a couple different ENT and was basically told to learn to live with it.

I have over time. It's always there but I can put it in the back of my mind. Right now since I am thinking about it, it is ringing so loud. But i know it will calm down when i stop thinking of it. nights are the worse. i also have a white noise maker and wave machine.

I guess all I can say is you do find a way to cope with it. I wouldn't wish this on anyone and I am so sorry you are dealing with it.

I had tinnitus throughout my highschool years. It started one evening, when I was 13 years old, out of the blue and stayed for 5 years.
Thankfully it wasn't too disruptive, it was a constant beeping sound which was especially annoying when I wanted to sleep and there was not other noise.
At the age of 18 it suddenly disappeared.
Unfortunately I didn't have enough parental support to have it properly checked out, but I'm pretty sure that it was stress induced, as those were very difficult years for me.

I have tinnitus due to hearing loss caused by the removal of an acoustic neuroma (brain tumor). When I woke up from surgery I was bothered by the loud sound of the air conditioning....which was actually the roaring of tinnitus in my head! After 9 years it is better and I hardly notice it but after being in a loud space for a while and going into the quiet, the roaring is loud. IE. we were at Universal and when we got to the parking garage, which is quiet, my head was loud.

I wouldn't give up on a diagnosis, not to scare you, but it could be a tumor or something causing it to get worse.

I've had a high-pitched cricket-like hum in my ears for years, and I think I probably first noticed it when I was about 8-9 years old. It's gotten louder over the years (and it gets louder if I clench my jaw), and it's really annoying when there isn't any background noise. I've got a noise machine in the bedroom, and an oscillating fan (for summer time.) Otherwise, I'm not aware of anything to do but cope. It can interfere with conversation by masking some high-frequency sounds.

I've probably had it for over 20 years, it doesn't go away, although I've gotten used to it and it doesn't bother me as much as it has in the past. Keep in mind that quite a few medications can cause tinnitus.

I sincerely cannot remember not having tinnitus in my right ear. It's a constant, high pitched sound that is ever present. Over the years, I've learned to ignore it. It's more noticeable at times or when I actively listen for it.

A friend of mine also has tinnitus. When I told her that I did too and that I simply ignore it, she said, "Well then, you don't have tinnitus. If you did, you wouldn't be able to ignore it." Whatever.....🙄

Sorry you’re dealing with this. I had it for around 6 months. No fun.

There are all sorts of reasons this happens. This was mine:

For years I got swimmer’s ear every summer after going in pools and the ocean. Sometimes I’d get earache, was always left with no sound for weeks. Each year longer period of 1 ear without sound. Doc would suggest Debrox drops which I’d use, but always seemed like time was what eventually fixed it. The last year my hearing did not come back and the tinnitus started up. It was miserable. Finally got a referral for ENT. They cleaned my ear twice over 2 weeks. The first visit was 80% improvement on both sound and tinnitus. Second visit got it to 100%. It’s been about 5 years trouble free now.

Hope you get relief and soon

Going thru this I came across a guy who was making an app and explained the reasoning. This was right before my ENT visit and I did not try. It may help? Here’s one similiar I found-

It has helped many people. Good luck.

Yup have had it for 30 years and contrary to You Tube ads I haven't lost my mind yet. As far as I know.
