Our district is planning to open one at the high school level in 2011. I recently attended a meeting to discuss some of the background of this type of school.
Anyone have a child that attends a STEM school with an IB curriculum? I would love to hear some personal feedback. My son really wants to attend. We have two high schools in the area, so this would extract kids from both schools.
I have a couple of concerns (I am sure the STEM committees will address these at a later date), but would like some personal opinions:
1. How does your school handle things like music, band, sports - other activities?
2. I am a little concerned on the social aspects of this type of school. Not so much on "making friends", but how does a school like this foster a sense of community with the regular high schools? For example, I don't want him to miss out on things that have to do with school spirit, proms, special things the schools do that bring kids together? Does this make sense?
Anywho, I would love other parents and teachers input.
Thanks and have a great day.
