Any experience with kidney stones?

My son was in the emergency room last night and the diagnosis was a kidney stone. He appeared to be in excruciating pain and had severe nausea and vomiting. We're home now with Flomax, Zofran, and anti pain meds. I'm pushing lots of water and a low sodium diet. He is cleared to go back to work tomorrow (at a local grocery store). Dr. Google says it can take anywhere from 1-4 weeks to pass. We leave for Florida in 12 days. Any stories with how long your kidney stone took to pass? Any tips?

Female here. I had those same symptoms when my kidney stone had caused me to go septic. I was in the hospital for several days.

Definitely work with a urologist -- my stone needed lithotripsy 4 times before it would break small enough to pass. Then the urologist did tests on the stone to determine how I got it (first time in my 52+ years at the time) -- mine was due to too many oxalates in my diet. It's amazing how much good (nutritious) food has oxalates -- spinach, potatoes, black tea, etc.

Female here also. If I’m at the point of throwing up, severe pain etc it can take varying amounts of time for it to pass. Usually once the pain subsides I didn’t care if it passed right away or not. You can still have the stone without pain. I’m gonna say for the most part the severe pain lasted with me 24 hrs at the most. Is the stone small enough to pass on its own? I’ve had stones that stayed years.

I’d be happy to answer any other questions. Hope the pain is gone soon - worst I’ve ever had.

@mamamary Thanks! They said it’s small enough to pass, it’s 2.5mm in his lower kidney as of the ct scan last night. Hopefully his pain is over

Fellow sufferer here. When I feel one coming on,I get a big glass of ice water and jump on the treadmill.Movement and fluids help to pass stones.

Did they give him a strainer to pee in to catch the stone? My husband had 2. He passed the first one maybe 12 hours after he was diagnosed. The other one was still in the kidney and decided to make an appearance several months later, but it passed right away After the pain started.

Hot, not warm water in the shower on his back as much and long as he can. Lots of water. Good luck. Once it passes he will be fine.

I've had multiple including one that was almost 3 cm and required surgery through my back to remove. But, I've also had several smaller. Once I got the meds the pain eased and they passed between a day to a week or so. Instant relief for me. I have one that's been waiting 10 years lol. Hoping it just quietly lives in there 😂

I've had several... one started the morning we were leaving for an 18 hour drive to Florida. :(

With my first one, I was surprised because the pain ended and I thought "cool, it's gone!" even though I hadn't seen it pass. Apparently they move, then they sit, then they move again... till they make it all the way out. They don't generally hurt much when they sit, but they sure do while they're moving.

I have found them easier to deal with after I knew what they were. (During the first one, i really wasn't too sure I wasn't going to die.)

Thank you everyone 😊 It was very scary last night as we don’t have any experience with kidney stones. I’ve given up my kitchen flour sifter for the cause and hopefully it comes out soon!

I’m passing along the hot shower and movement tips also. Thanks again!

I had my first, and hopefully last, in late January. Unfortunately, I was 3,000 miles from home at the time, helping a relative who just had surgery and was now in a rehabilitation facility located over three hours from their home. And we didn’t have a car there.

My episode began at around 9 am on a Friday while waiting for a bus to the rehab facility. I had pain and felt nauseous at times. I stayed at the rehab about an hour or two and wasn’t feeling any better, so left. Around midnight it felt like the pain had eased a bit and I hadn’t felt nauseous for hours, so was hoping it was going away.

I was also thinking organ failure of some kind and I would need surgery and mess up my relative’s release timetable! So I was avoiding confronting the situation, hoping it was just something that would clear up. Finally at midnight on Sunday I took an Uber to the ER, where they determined it was a kidney stone. It was a 3 cm stone so they said it was a size that could be passed. They prescribed a pain killer and anti-nausea medication, but I didn’t end up needing them.

I passed it Wednesday evening, so about five and a half days from when I first felt the effects of the stone.

Hope your son passes it soon. They kept telling me to look for a grain of sand, but it was much larger than any sand grains I am used to!

Worst pain ever! My one and only(p (knock on wood) was 10 years ago. I had no clue what it was but the pain was horrendous. I couldn’t sit, I had to stand. Some nausea, it mostly the pain.

I went to the hospital twice. The first time they diagnosed it, sent me home with some painkillers which did nothing for the pain. I might as well have eaten a sweet tart. The second time I went back they gave me Percocet which did the trick. It still took days for it to pass but it moved to a spot where the pain wasn’t too bad.

I have read stories where people ride big thunder mountain and the stone breaks free! My husband gets them. I hope he passes it soon.

My ex husband had kidney stones once (this was many, many years ago so the details are fuzzy). We went to the ER, he was in a pretty bad way. I remember we were there for several hours, and they came back with that diagnosis. I am not sure what kind of meds they gave him, but they sent us home like in the early morning hours. He wasn't down for too long, seems like he was alright in a couple days.

We have a friend who had them so bad she had to have surgery. OMG she ended up being miserable, and the recovery was awful.

Husband had kidney stones. Took him to urologist. Had CT scan to confirm and locate where it was in the kidneys. One was larger than the other, one in each kidney. Doctors office gave us some materials to catch/strain out for the stone. Doctor wanted to send stone to lab to find out what type of stone it was. Did blood work too for that. Different stones require different treatment and foods you should avoid. I don't remember how long it took to pass the stone, you really need to "watch out for it". I would guess to say it took longer than 12 days...sorry. A lot would depend on size and were the stone is located. I agree with other posters, make appointment for a urologist.
