I don't know if you're religious or not, but my mother was told by her priest when my grandmother died (on my mom's birthday!) not to think of it as her death, but her birth into new life. Not sure if that's comfort for you, but it's intended in that way.

Next year, maybe bring something special, even if it's just a magnet photo of your grandmother, to honor her.
