I have a 6.22 lb. whole chicken which I'd like to cook in my crock pot, but I can't find any recipes that call for a 6 lb. chicken (how I ended up with this chicken is a separate story). I know I can probably modify a smaller recipe, but I'm not always so good at doing that!

I like the kind of crock pot recipes that are not too much of a fuss; just mix a bunch of stuff together and pour over top. So, does anyone have any ideas?

Mix these dry spices together and coat the inside and outside of the chicken-you may want to double it in case you want it really flavorful. Quarter some onions and stuff inside the chicken. You're done-plop it in the crock pot!

2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon paprika
3/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon thyme
1/2 teaspoon white pepper
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Just stuff an onion in the cavity, salt/pepper and spread a can of cream of mushroom soup over the top of the chicken, cover & cook. :)

Mine is sorta like tuffcookies

I put the chicken in the crock pot, cut up some potatoes & onions add a can of cream of chicken soup ( without water) and sprinkle a pack of onion soup mix over it and cook

OR

Take the chicken and rice ( however much you would need for your family, dont use instant rice) and then use a can of cream of mushroom, 1 can of cream of chicken ( no water with either can) and then sprinkle a pack of onion soup mix over it.

Works well with other types of meat ( pheasant, quail, rabbit, venison & beef)

You can start chicken and dumplings in the crock pot. Start with whole or cut up chicken in the crockpot. Add onion, 1 large can or chicken broth and fill the rest of the pot with water. Two hours before serving add cut carrots and celery. Season to taste. Debone chicken. Place entire contents of crockpot in a pot and bring to a boil. Follow directions for dumplings on the Buisquick box and enjoy! Very easy and great for the winter.

That is one BIG chicken!!!!

Must be a "homegrown" chicken..lol

We raise our own chickens and its nothing to get back 10lb or so chicken back from the processor. ( The first time we raised chickens ( free ranged ) and picked them up from the processor I honestly thought he mixed our chickens up and gave me turkeys instead they were that big..lol But it convinced hubby that I wasnt wasting my time raising chickens..lol) The whole chickens you buy in the store look like cornish hens compared to what we have....and ours tastes sooo much better

( hope I didnt open a can of worms...lol :rotfl:  )

Whatever you do, don't overcook it. Nothing is worse than overcooked, crockpot chicken. It's dry, stringy and tasteless! Blech!

Cut up 4 carrots, 4 celery stalks, 2 or 3 onions. Put half the veggies on the bottom of crock pot. Put chicken on top. Put rest of veggies in on top of chicken. Pour 2 cups water over chicken. Then top with 1 tsp. of basil and 2-3 Tbsp. of Italian seasoning. Cook on low for 8 -10 hrs. or high for 5-6 hrs. I serve or either rice or mashed potatoes. This makes a great juicy sauce that is great! My kids love it. I usually use 5lb. chickens, but 6 would work also.

I then take the left overs and make chicken pot pie over noodles (my kids don't like the breading of the pies, so I pour over egg noodles.) I use 2 cups chicken, about a 1 1/2 cups frozen mixed veggies and 2 cans cream of chicken. I also add some sage and thyme. Mix it all up and pour over egg noodles. Or another left over meal is....

Chicken and gravy. I buy 2 packages of chicken gravy (the kind that is powder and you add water to and simmer in pan) I get them 2 for 69 cents at Kroger. I heat up 2 cups chicken. I make mashed potatoes. I pour the chicken and gravy over the mashed potatoes and serve with a veggie, like green beans.

With a 6lb. chicken you may get all three meals out of it. Cheap!!!!

Wow, thanks everyone! Now I have a bunch of choices for what to do with my chicken... they all sound yummy!

Last night it occurred to me that maybe the chicken wouldn't even fit into my crock pot. I pushed and shoved a little bit, and got it to fit. :cool1: It is wedged in and the top sticks up a little bit, but it clears the cover which still fits properly. I guess I won't have much room for extra vegetables and such as some have mentioned, although that really does sound good... maybe I will try that in the future with a smaller chicken.

There is some space in certain areas so I can at least pour some liquid and spices over it. Thanks again for all the great ideas! :cheer2:

I might rethink putting that big of a chicke in a crocpot!. I'd put that size chicken in the oven to roast so it will cook evenly.
