Thinking of driving in and looking for some recommendations for the drive there and back.
1. What time do you leave home?
2. Do you drive straight through or make a stop If you stop overnight where?
3. What time do you leave WDW for your return home?
4. Do you drive straight through or make a stop If you stop overnight where?
5. Do you think it is safe to drive?
6. Do you think I am crazy?:)

I understand that these answers will be based on your experience and everyone has a different feel for it. Just looking to hear about everyone's experience.

We have driven many times to the world. We live near Phila, Pa so it's about a 16 hr drive. Generally leave about 2AM so we get thru DC before the morning rush. Now in the past I've always intended to stop somewhere over right but have always driven straight thru. Now that we're in our early to mid 60's on our next trip in October the plan is to leave the next day and stop ,probably in Georgia ,perhaps spend an evening in Savannah and arrive the next day.
The straight thru is easy and doable but at our ages 67&63 and being retired there's no point in my view.

There is a great point in your view. My wife and I are both retired and we are both 66 years of age. Thanks for your input

We have driven from ~ 20 miles north of Philadelphia and stop overnight in Savannah Georgia. We leave on a Saturday ~ 5am to 6am. On return trip we leave on a Saturday ~ 9am to 10am and drive north as far as we can get and try and make it to Virginia before stopping overnight.

We live an hour north of NYC. So, our trip may be similar to yours. We leave mid-day and break the drive up with a night's sleep somewhere in the Carolinas or GA, then roll into WDW late morning/early afternoon the next day. We usually do a similar return trip. We have done this more times that I can count (3 times the last 8 months). Your question regarding whether it is safe is all a matter of preference. We have never felt unsafe with the drive itself. However, we had one trip where we drove through an ice storm from NJ to VA, which I think was very unsafe, but thankfully we made it safely.

Hi, we live in northern NJ. My husband likes to take the I-81 route as it avoids all the congestion around D.C. since he likes to leave on a Saturday around 6am in the morning. We drive about 11 hours and then stop around Columbia, S.C to sleep overnight. Then continue on our way in the morning and get to WDW around 2pm on Sunday. We leave WDW on a Saturday around 8am. So far, we've driven straight through back to home. If anyone has any recommendations for hotels in VA, I'll like to have them.

On 81 or 95?

We have driving down several times from Northeast Ohio. It is roughly a 20 hours drive. The first few times we would drive straight though there and back. The last 2 trips we stopped at Kingsland, GA for the night on the way down. We leave our house around 3am and get to Kingsland around 6ish pm. We eat dinner, let the kids swim and get a good nights sleep before leaving at about 6 am for Disney.

We usually always drive straight through on the way home except for the last trip. I burnt my leg pretty bad in South Carolina when we stopped for lunch (spilled hot water for tea on me). With a stop at the ER and just being in so much pain we stopped somewhere around the VA/WVA area. We were going to stop in Beckley, WVA but all the hotels were full. We leave Disney around 6 am to head home.

We come from Cape May NJ, and are taking the Cape May -Lewes ferry. We are in our mid 70’s and are heading to Vero, and this time we are allowing two nights en route. In late February due to weather, torrential rain, and traffic what we thought would be 8 hour drives turned into 12 hours, both days. We didn’t take the ferry last time. This time we hope to avoid the Virginia/DC traffic completely. We are doing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and tunnel. DH picked this route.

I am sure you can do better than us! :goodvibes

We drove many times over the years from Long Island. We left around 4 AM to get over the bridges. Drove with an occasional bathroom stop on I-95 and one lunch stop. Got to Santee, SC (exit 98) around 5 PM. Eat dinner...Best Western had a nice restaurant. We would have their continental breakfast at 6 AM the next morning. Get on the road again and pull into WDW around 1-1:30. Were pretty fresh from a good night's sleep so we were able to enjoy the day.

1. Usual noon but I'm NJ and depending on what part of LI you are would make me leave earlier cause I know getting of the island can be rough.
2. Depends. If I do noon leave that means I'm in the mindset of a stop and usually Savanah. If I do a 6pm leave that's my thru the night run
3. 5am ish
4. Straight always. Unless there some crazy which happened (rested for a while) once I'd rather push to sleep in my own bed
5. Yes. Don't blaze trail and just keep up with traffic. Too slow or fast IMHO is whee you get into trouble
6. No way. My advice. On overnight drives it can get real rough. Extra rest stops or even a nap will keep you safe.

Fellow LI'er here. I have my route NY --> Orlando no tolls
Orlando --> NY two tolls (used to be one until they changed the tolling pattern on the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge

1. What time do you leave home? -> 12:00 AM/ 1:00 AM latest
2. Do you drive straight through or make a stop If you stop overnight where? --> Straight through. Usually arrive in WDW in time for dinner
3. What time do you leave WDW for your return home? --> 7:00 AM/8:00 AM latest
4. Do you drive straight through or make a stop If you stop overnight where? --> Somewhere in NC. Smithfield or Wilson
5. Do you think it is safe to drive? --> Of course it it safe. Look at all the license place from the NE States
6. Do you think I am crazy?:) --> Yes. Two hrs to fly vs 17 hrs to take flight 95

You want to leave early in the morning to avoid the worst of the traffic in your city. Once you get on 95, it is going to be bad around any of the major cities. Take bypasses when you can, like I-295 that goes around Richmond. I would plan my mid-trip stop ahead of time so you know where and when as well as the cost. Driving is quite safe right now.

We live in Queens, near the Woodhaven Blvd LIE exit, and have driven down 4 times, though the last time was in December 2015.

1. What time do you leave home?
We usually aimed to be fully loaded into the car and ready to pull out between 5:30 and 6am. On a weekend, that is early enough that the drive through the Midtown Tunnel/midtown/Lincoln Tunnel is traffic free enough that it beats going all around the Belt and through Staten Island. Adjust according to your specific location on LI.

That is not early enough to avoid DC traffic, but we never wanted to get up in the middle of the night to start an all day drive and that's what you need to do to beat DC rush hour, even on a weekend. We often took a bypass down the Crain Highway a bit east of DC in Maryland [Route or Highway 301]. I think we usually got to that from 695 around Baltimore, to 97 to 301. It links back to I-95 around Richmond. But we also found that area got more developed over just the 3-4 years we drove it and ended up getting backed up there as well. Hard to say what's the best of mostly poor options. Check your favorite GPS/MAP planner for your best judgment on that.

2. Do you drive straight through or make a stop If you stop overnight where?
We usually eat dinner somewhere in NC, and try to push on to Santee, SC for the overnight stop. You can also overnight on Florence, SC which is an hour closer to New York. Santee leaves you ~6 hours from WDW, Florence, about 7.

3. What time do you leave WDW for your return home?
4. Do you drive straight through or make a stop If you stop overnight where?

Coming home, we usually leave not quite so early, probably between 7 and 8am. We overnight in Rocky Mount, NC. In our experience, there are, frankly, no ideal or even good options for passing through or around DC and approaching NYC on the return trip. The Crain Highway again is a possibility, but seems to work less often than going south. You especially can never leave early enough that you won't hit traffic returning to the NYC metro area. I suppose you could time it to hit your first bridge or tunnel some time between 1am and 5am, but we've never had the stomach for that sort of trip timing.

Also, coming home, traffic can be rough until you hit I-16 near Savannah and lots of people peel off to head towards Atlanta and assorted Central Time Zone locations. Then it usually clears up, but can slow again when you hit SC where I-95 narrows to 2 lanes.

5. Do you think it is safe to drive?
6. Do you think I am crazy?:)

Sharp answers Yes, then No.
Longer answers: I'm not sure if you mean generally traffic and relative transportation safety or Covid related issues. On general safety, I believe flying is usually safer than driving, but that does not make driving unsafe. We have never had an issue or even found any stretch of road between metro NYC and Orlando to be particularly dangerous or filled with crazy rage drivers or anything like that. As for Covid, that's really a matter of personal comfort level I think. I would not hesitate to drive to FLorida right now based on safety. Of course, everything entails some risk. Even staying at home.

Crazy? Goodness no. It's not everyone's preference, but I think it is definitely worth trying once. We've never done the all day no stop option, though it can work. It's just not for us. In all, we try to do 60-70% of the driving on day one in each direction, and leave less for day 2, in both directions. We also find stopping for meals is refreshing enough that it justifies the time it takes. My wife and I always split the driving. It's both fun and tiresome. Unless you're certain you'll hate it I say go for it. You might never want to do it again, but I think you'll probably be glad for the experience.

This is almost exactly what we do from CT, but we get to Santee around 7-8 pm, depending on traffic.

We just drove again from CT last October and in my opinion, the drive down is so easy because after you're through NYC and DC, the rest is a straight, easy drive, although it's looonnnngggg. I hate the drive home because the worst part for us is getting through NYC and it comes at the end when we're beat.

We felt pretty safe driving in October because we brought most of our food and tried to stop at places that were chains and enforcing safety protocols…McDonald's and Holiday Inn, for example. On the rare occasion we had to stop and use the restroom in a random place, we jut went in quickly and wore our masks and got in and out.

Driving home is different because we just leave when we are ready. In October we left around 11 am and got to North Carolina, but almost to the VA border. We stayed at a Holiday Inn Express again (always my choice for a reasonably priced, clean hotel on the road), and then woke up early the next day to finish the ride.

We just completed our 25th drive down and are currently in Orlando. We are from central CT. Left at about 5am, stopped in Florence SC (around 740 miles) at 6pm or so. Always target a Holiday Inn Express -- predictable, clean, great beds, reasonable price. Get up and leave around 7:30 and get to our house in Orlando (20 minutes from Epcot, near the airport) at around 3pm (approx. 450 miles).

We never drive straight through. On the return we will leave here around 7am and go to Emporia Va, about 700 miles, Next day leave at 7am for the absolutely torturous remaining 500 miles. It is ---- by a long margin --- the worst part of the round trip.

We are in our "early" 60s now. When we first started driving we would go all the way to Hardeeville SC the first day, almost 900 miles. Those days are gone and Florence is a decent first day target.

We don't stop much. This last trip was our first with our new 2021 Toyota Sienna, which is a hybrid and has a range of almost 550 miles. One gas/lunch stop on the first day, then fill up when we get to our destination and are then ready for day 2.

We have found that we would rather get to the days destination around 5 or 6 pm as opposed to going until 8 or 9. Gives us a little time to grab a bite and rest for the next days journey.
