First trip end of July, first thread, I have two boys 9 and 12 any suggestions for dining for that age? Obviously I cant make reservations since I have read all the posts about 180 day advance required. Did not get dining plan. Any help or suggestions would be great.

First of all :welcome: to the Dis :)

Chef Mickey´s at the Contemporary Resort is definately one of the most fun places around. It´s a character meal with Mickey, Minnie, Pluto and Goofy.

My kids also love Crystal Palace in Magic Kingdom, hosted by Winnie the Pooh and his friends.

This year we´re going to try the new Tusker House character breakfast in the Animal Kingdom with Donald, Daisy and some other characters which I can´t recall at the moment.

The Sci-Fi diner in the Studios is also a very fun place where you can dine in "drive-in movie style". You are seated in old cars and they run old black and white b-category horror movies from the ´60´s.

Have a magical trip!

you may still be able to get ADRs. There are some restaurants that get booked early and definitely some times that get booked early. Even in these situations people cancel ADRs all the time.

My son is approaching the younger one's age. You're a better judge if they would be interested in any character meals. Some that age are too cool for characters. Biergarten in Epcot I think would be good for kids that age. Sci Fi in Hollywood Studios is another that they would probably like. Whispering Canyon Cafe and Prime Time Cafe are interactive and kids might find them fun.

A couple of those will be difficult to get but it is worth a try. I'm sure someone else will come up with more suggestions.

Hello fellow-Texan! Welcome the DIS!

I have six sons and we have been to WDW 22+ times as a family so I have a good idea of what boys like! If my boys had never been before and I wanted to wow them, I would suggest WCC (mine became tired of the "antics" after the first couple of visits), Sci-Fi, HDR, Teppan Edo (they have never tired of this), LTT character dinner, 'Ohana, and because most of mine are adventurous eaters:Boma! Can't forget 50's PT...

Thanks everyone for the info I am taking baby steps. Now that I have suggestions, what next? This is only my second post and I dont have a clue what I am doing. Please have patience with me, I dont understand the language...all the letters in the responses..I dont even know who I'm writing back to..lol..sorry. Do I have to make reservations for that sci fi one? If so, how do I do it.

The too cool statement is accurate. Someone else suggested the sci fi one so what do i do next? Do all of them require reservations? How do I do that? Thanks for your help. When I do this quick reply, is it where evrybody who responded can see it? Just trying to figure out if I am repeating myself...sorry.

I suggest Sci Fi at DHS, I would also try Chef Mickeys.........just because it is a great time for all ages...........did you say you are not on the dining plan? You can still make reservations by calling 407 WDW DINE........I even made a reservation for a meal while we were at the hotel room for the following day.........It just depends on which place you are wanting to eat......

I have heard that Hoop De DOO Review is fun, never tried it yet. My brother did the Backyard Barbque with his son and they loved it......also Whispering Canyon is said to be a fun time, but I haven't done it yet either.........

Okay, let's see....Whispering Canyon Cafe (WCC) is a western type restaurant that is loud and a lot of fun for people who are not shy and don't mind being the center of attention. Liberty Tree Tavern (LTT) is in Magic Kingdom (MK) and it's a like a colonial style traditional thanksgiving meal. Sci-fi is at Hollywood Studios (DHS) and it's like a 50's style drive-in movie, complete with old cars to sit in for your meal....It's all overwhelming, isn't it?!

I would also suggest Chef Mickey's at the Contemporary Resort (CR), Sci-fi, Crystal Palace at the Magic Kingdom. Chef Mickey's and Crystal Palace are character meals. Coral Reef at Epcot is a restaurant that has huge windows into the Epcot aquarium. ESPN on the Boardwalk is a sports oriented place. Rainforest Cafe at Downtown Disney (DTD) is great too.

Make reservations by calling Disney Dining: 407-WDW-DINE (939-3463)

I hope that helps a little. Enjoy planning!:goodvibes

I have 9 & 10 yr old little Texan boys like you. :goodvibes Mine love 'Ohana character breakfast, Biergarten, and Sci Fi Dine-In Theatre.

Ditto to those

I have a 9 yo son and his favorites are in order. : Chef Mickeys at the Contemporary Resort, Sci-Fi at Disney Studios, and Beaches and Cream at the Beach Club/Yacht Club resorts.

My 10 and 12 yr old's love the following Coral Reef, Sci-Fi, Whispering Canyon, Beaches and Cream and Marakeesh.

I would probably look into the following:

1. Hoop De Doo Revue (a dinner show but a little pricey)
2. Ohana
3. Sci Fi ( didnt like the food much but kids like the atmosphere - they show old sci-fi movie clips on a movie screen)
4. 50s Prime Time Cafe (some crazy server antics)
5. Whispering Canyon Cafe (hint - ask for ketchup and a drink refill)

Also, Sci Fi and 50s Prime Time are both located in Disney Studios which I think our kids appreciated. That way we didn't actually have to leave the park to eat which sometimes was considered a "waste of time" by them. ;)

My DS 12yrs. Loves: Tony's Town Square, O'hana Breakfast, Sci fi

asking questions on this site is that there are a lot of people that have experienced what you are looking for. The bad can be that for the novice the amount of data and language can be daunting at first.

People have been kind enough to clarify the short-hand names for most of the recommended restaurants and have provided their locations. Here is a link that provides hours and menus for all of the Disney restaurants:

http://www.wdwinfo.com/wdwinfo/dining/disneydining.cfm#mgm

You asked whether a reservation (an ADR in Disney lingo) was always necessary. (An ADR means that you show up at a certain time and get the next available table.) Disney has table service and counter service. Table service generally have ADRs available and the number to get these is posted above. The next link identifies counter and service restaurants by location. You can pretty much ignore the snack column. Signature restaurants are more expensive locations that still take ADRs. Counter service restaurants are similar to fast food in that you order at a counter and take your own food to the table.

This last link is to reviews that Disney guests have given for different restaurants and resorts. I find the people doing the reviews are pretty honest. You'll find though that people have different tastes so pretty much any restaurant has positive ad negative reviews.

This thread has a lot of good recommendations. Start with the ones here. If you try to go through all of the restaurants you will drive yourself crazy.

Good Luck

Let me decipher these: WCC (Whispering Canyon Cafe at Wilderness Lodge)

Sci-Fi (Sci-Fi Dine in at the Hollywood Studios)

HDR (Hoop-De-Doo Revue at Fort Wilderness)

Teppan Edo (in the Japanese Pavilion at EPCOT)

LTT (Liberty Tree Tavern in the Magic Kingdom)

'Ohana (at the Polynesian Resort)

Boma (at the Animal Kingdom Lodge)

50's PT (50's Prime Time Cafe in Hollywood Studios)

Hope this helps! Sorry to have overwhelmed you. Somewhere around here (maybe look on the DIS homepage) there is a list of common abbreviations used on this site. You will find it very helpful! Let us know what reservations you make!
