any dentist's here?

I had a crown removed on Tuesday to fix a cavity under it and wound up needing a root canal, which I had on Friday. I'm supposed to get the crown back on later, but I have a temporary one for now. My problem is it still bothers me. I can't tell if it's that the crown is too high and I keep hitting it when I close my mouth and I keep irritating it, or if the root canal didn't work. Is it still just irritated because it was infected (was on antibiotics for 5 days) ? Any help would be appreciated...

if you had a root canal your dentist should be making a post and core and then a new crown to go over that....
work done on a tooth that has been altered by any other work will not fit the remaining tooth correctly.

Temporary crowns don't really fit well and they are not fun to wear. Root canals are sore for awhile.

Thank goodness. Well, not really, but I'm terrified it didn't work and I'll have to get it pulled, which I really DO NOT want to do. That's why I just dumped a ton of money into the root canal and new crown option.

Any idea how long it is supposed to bother me? I mean, I had it done Friday and it's Monday now.

What kind of pain? Is it constant? Or only when you bite down? From the info you gave in the first post, my guess would be you need the temp adjusted.

Having huge experience with all things dental...

I would say your bite is off..needs to be adjusted.

I'm surprised they removed the crown. I just had a root canal late last month of a corwned tooth. The endontist drilled through the crown to do the root canal. About ten days later my reular dentist did a permanent repair by putting in a filling.

And I had a similar procedure about ten years ago, and the same thing was done (on a different tooth, of course). That is much safer than removing and replacing the crown (and also costs a lot less).

Actually--that is true. I had a root canal a couple of years back and the Endodontist also went through the Crown..

They didn't know it needed a root canal until they got in there. She was hoping to just fill the cavity but it was too deep.

When it hits the top tooth, it hurts kind of like a whack, not sharp or anything, but sometimes it does throb by itself or once in a while I get a nice achy feeling for a little while.

I guess I'll just hope for a good placement of the permanent crown when they do that. Thanks again....

When are you getting your permanent crown? If your temp is really bugging you go in and have him adjust it.

I don't know. The Endo was sending paperwork to my regular dentist that the root canal was done, and then they would call me to set up the next crown appointment.

If it's not better in the next day or so and I don't hear from them, I will call.

Don't wait. I'd call tomorrow. They can adjust your bite. The tooth itself needs time to heal, it can't if you are putting stress on it because the bite is off.

Hopefully your dentist isn't to far away!

I can't speak for a dentist, but I have had a root canal done & I had a great dentist-never felt a thing-even after! (And I have a HUGE fear of the dentist chair...) As far as pain goes-I swear by clove oil-I don't leave home w/o it-not sure if your pain is from the actual work from the root canal or if they put a temporary crown that interferes with your bite-that's more of a nuisance than pain though..hmm...good luck.
