Any Car mechanics here?

On saturday we were driving along and stopped at a stop sign. When we stepped on the gas to get going the car kinda lurched and didn't really move. We backed up (did the same thing) and went forward again. More of the same. It was like a lurching movement and there were some grinding noises.
We pulled into a parking lot and checked things out. Moving the gear shift (automatic) you could see the lever moving just fine to the transmission.
We ended up having it towed. I talked with them this morning and they will check it out and let us know. I have a feeling it is not good.
Any thoughts??????

Depends on what kind of van

front wheel drive, could be an axle (CV joint- would have started with a clicking noise. Cost to repair $150 - 300 )

rear wheel drive, could be ring gear and differential (look in a salvage yard for a new rear end)
If it is an old van, you may want to think about getting rid of it.

Definately a transmission problem. Sometime these can be easy fixes like the gear selection lever not properly hooked up. All the way to the transmission needing an overhaul/replacement. Sometimes it can even be the computer control module going haywire.

Oh yes, I had it towed to my regular mechanic. If for some reason he can't fix it he will refer me to an honest place. My mechanic is great!
