How did it go?

I'm considering doing this since it should be cheaper for us.
Has anyone had any problems with renting from a US member when you are in Canada?

Just wondering if there was anything extra I should take into consideration as a Canadian.

Thanks

I want to know about this too...We want to try it out as well. I hope you get a lot of answers...I hope you don't mind me hanging out here to read up on this too.:flower3:

We rented points twice from DVC owners from these boards. Always easy transactions. Once the person had access for us to pay through VISA, the other we had to send a registered USD cheque in the mail. They mailed us the confirmation sheets and I could phone the resort to confirm our reservation. Once we stayed at Boardwalk and the other time at Beach Club. Loved how cheap it was for great accommodations!

Rented twice from 2 different people. Paid around $12 a point I think.
No problems.
PM me if you want more in depth info.

Just back from a 10 day vacation renting pts from a DVC member. We stayed in a 2 bedroom at SSR and I can tell you we paid FAR less than the $10-12 on the posts.

If you want to pm me we can discuss but I don't think I should on these boards.

Overall, I had anxiety but my "landlord" and I spoke and emailed regularily and eventually I trusted her completely. She made me pay half when I booked last Oct and the rest 60 days out. She gave me a contract and also sent me the reservation confrimation from Disney. She booked my ME. I tried to call SSR once and ask about my reservatin and they quickly told me they could only speak with the DVC owner.

I would do this again in a heartbeat!! I found the listing on redweek.com - not on these boards.

We rented before we bought DVC. It was a great experience. I believe we paid 10.00 a point. Go to the DVC forum and read up on about renting points. Their is a lot you need to know. I believe a few Canadian members rent their points also.:)

Renting points is a fantastic way to experience the deluxe resorts for roughly half the cost that Disney charges. We rented points last year for the first time and enjoyed five nights at the Beach Club Villas.

The drawback is that it's a private transaction and you have to trust the person you're dealing with. The whole reservation must be setup by the owner - DVC will not speak to you, the renter. You can also add the dining plan and Magical Express, but again, the DVC owner must arrange them on your behalf. We were very fortunate to find an owner (through these boards) who took the time to answer all of our questions before we paid. There's no way to tell for sure who you're dealing with, but owners who have rented before should be able to provide references.

I'd also recommend researching the DVC point system and types of accommodations if you're not familiar. For example, the cost can vary a lot depending on the type of room (studio/1-bedroom/2-bedroom), the season, and especially the day of the week. By far the least expensive way to rent DVC points is 5 weeknights - Sunday to Thursday night. Weekends (Fri/Sat nights) are almost twice as expensive! (However, I've read that DVC is changing the point costs next year so that the difference between weekdays and weekends is smaller). You'll also find that certain resorts are in higher demand are harder to get reservations for, like BCV, BWV, VWL. So if you're looking for one of these, you might have to start looking further in advance.

Good luck!

I have rented points several times. I love it and I probably wont do it any other way!
I will be staying at SSR in a studio for 10 days for $1016, which is phenomenal if you ask me!!!

Wow what a great price!
How much per point was that?

I noticed that the highest price per point that a DVD member pays in 2009 (for maintenance fees) is 6.50us I think, so I figure anything over that and they are making money on their investment, so I'm looking for cheap points.

Not true, you can call and arrange everything yourself (dining plan and magical express) when you have recieved the confirmation number for your reservation.

$8.50
I got the deal back in December, but its very easy to find people selling points for $8... sorry I apologize it is 9 night...i keep counting the days

my one tip for anyone looking to rent points, try to not do weekends, or atleast not have two weekends in your stay. Friday and Saturday nights are almost double the amount of points. Even people who own DVC stay at different resorts if their holidays start on the weekends. I am arriving on the Monday staying at SSR until the following Wednesday and then staying at AKV for 2 nights and leaving the friday.

Maybe we were just unlucky? We were a bit nervous about the process so we tried to call and ask how the dining/ME worked when renting, but were told that they had to speak to the DVC owner!?! :confused3

Oh well, it all worked out. The owner added them for us and the ME tags arrived in the mail a week or two later!

hmmm...wondering if i just got lucky??? I know the first time i did it the girl did it for me, but the last two times Ive called in myself:confused3

Have done it several times and have never had a problem. I have used the same guy for our last three family trips. They have all been great with no problems at all.
:thumbsup2

We rented in 2007, and have just completed an agreement renting points for a two-bedroom next January. It's a great way to stay at a deluxe at a great price!

Price per point has an awful lot to do with what you want to rent, the resort, and when you want to go. If you want a "hard-to-get" reservation - such as a 2-bedroom unit with a Boardwalk view during food and wine festival, or an AKL club level, then you have to book 11-months out. Owners will typically ask more per point at 11 months out for these resorts - it's all about supply and demand. The new resorts too, such as BLT, seem to be going for higher $ at 11 months out.

Typically the lower priced points are offered by owners whose points are about to expire relatively soon, and therefore they offer a great opportunity for anyone who is flexible in terms of resort choice and/or dates
