Any airlines that are allergy friendly (nut-free)

peanut-allergy mom here...

to answer some of the queries... my son is effected by peanut dust, so yes, inhalation will trigger a reaction... a pb&j twenty or even two rows away will likely not kill him (or even trigger a reaction)

If he is affected by peanut dust then Peanut butter wouldn't affect him at all isn't that true? There is no dust in peanut butter. So asking people not to eat peanut butter crackers or sandwiches is the overkill many people are complaining about.

i concur!! and i agree that there is overkill on the allergy issue... no pun intended :rotfl2:

as i said above, a pb&j will likely not even trigger a reaction... but smearing that pb from your hand to the bathroom door handle where he may touch can...

I would hope that you are asking them to make announcements at the gate. As vegetarians who cannot have things with certain ingredients in them (won't kill us, but will make others WANT to kill my kid from his reaction) with one person having blood sugar problems...you can see that nuts are actually quite a large part of our diet. For a year now, we don't bring our PB&Js onto the plane b/c of posts here, we will eat them at the gate area. But plenty of others don't belong here, and haven't decided to make that change. So those people who might have issues like MY family could probably run into big problems on the plane, if an announcement isn't made until after the plane is closing up to take off.

The ingredient issues in my family make most of the pretzels and non-nut snacks on planes not OK and there are plenty of other people who have to or choose to not eat the same things we do (things based on corn syrup)...so if an announcement isn't made and there's a family like ours...it's putting that family into a very bad place.

So please try to make sure they announce it at the gate area...

As for clorox wipes...I *can* have a pretty nasty allergic reaction to those...FYI.

i have asked for gate announcements (having learned it HERE!) but have never been successful with that...

and jftr, typically the replacement snacks on southwest are also not safe, having been manufactured in a facility that shares equipment with nut products, so we're out of luck on that too!

again, eating your pb&j on the plane and triggering an allergic reaction is someone seems quite rare to me and i'm pretty well-versed on food allergies...

Actually the studies I have seen say that any reaction to the smell of peanut butter is usually a psychological attack for someone who has had a reaction. Meaning they react emotionally not truly physically to the scent. I'm not saying inhaling peanut dust which has the protein but just the smell of made peanut butter.

you're probably right... but i'm not willing to test it on my kid a mile up in the sky ;)

Just FYI, the US Department of Transportation just closed a period of public feedback in regard to a proposed full or partial peanut ban on US-based carriers.

Incorrect on two grounds. First, DOT has extended the comment period for the various pending proposals (not limited to peanuts) until September 23 (http://edocket.access.gpo.gov/2010/pdf/2010-19123.pdf). Second, shortly after its initial proposals were released, DOT issued a "clarification" that it doesn't actually have the authority at this time to do anything about peanuts (http://edocket.access.gpo.gov/2010/pdf/2010-15536.pdf).
