Guess I over did my workout yesterday. I increased the weight during my leg presses and added in lunges with weights, when I work up this morning all was fine. Went to lunch and all was fine. When I started to get up from my desk about 2 it was like fire was shooting through my upper legs. I took today "off" from weight training but did do my walking and stretching. It doesn't seem to be any better. I have more training scheduled tomorrow. This not severe pain by any means just bad soreness. I actually wince when I stand up, any advice?

Water water water.

And take tomorrow's training off. If it's so bad that you're taking pain medication AND a muscle relaxer, that means it's bad. Take tomorrow off. Don't do it.

And keep stretching with breaks for drinking more water.

Although it's going to hurt when you do it, use a foam roller to roll it out. It's probably all the lactic acid and if you roll it out and drink lots of fluids, your body will get rid of that acid. If you don't have access to a foam roller, just use your thumbs and give yourself a deep tissue massage where it hurts. That will help too.

There is a big difference between soreness and pain. Soreness is good, it means the workout challenged your muscles. Pain, not so much.

With soreness I might just ignore it and proceed either as normal or slightly modify my workout. Sore legs a day after a leg workout won't keep me from running but I may skip the hills or run a shorter route. Pain is different. You have to either wait it out or get it looked at.

Everything they said - and if it is just soreness I love Tiger Balm. You can find it at some stores and CVS type places. I find it at our local whole foods store. But like Bengay that stuff is strong smelling, so fair warning if you'll be out and about.

I second tiger balm!

DH has a bad back and gets spasms all the time. I use tiger balm to work the muscle loose again.

Try a foam roller. To use them is painful, but it helps push the lactic acid out and elongate the muscle fiber. Water helps a lot, but chocolate milk is a great after workout drink.
Good luck

I'm having the same problem. I just started regularly exercising again after years (Eek!) off. I am sore from a workout 2 days ago. It's not so bad to walk or anything, but my thighs are very painful when pressed on. And my son doesn't understand I'm not a jungle gym! Haha. What is a foam roller, and what do you do with it?

Your two best friends for sore muscles are water and protein. Make sure you don't sit for too long or your legs will be very stiff when you do get up. I would say try to get up and stretch at least once an hour.

Here is a great site. Foam Roller Exercises After not exercising the advise I have is keep going. I found it took 5 days to get over my soreness and you are sore if you workout or not. So I just kept pushing through.
Good Luck

That was very helpful. I'll have to pick one up next time I'm in town.
I room yesterday off and started again today. You're right - I'm sore no matter what. Might as well keep making progress.
Thanks for the advice, guys.

Thanks for all the advice. Guess all I needed was a couple days for my muscles to recover. I am back 100%, I plan on re-starting my lunges tomorrow (but this time I will work up the reps and lbs slowly).

Thanks for all the helpful advice, I am back to normal. I plan on restarting my leg work tomorrow but will be wise about it this time and ease into it.
