Any Advice For A Real Chicken??

I am someone who was a really big chicken my whole life. I grew up with a mom who was- so I was too. ;) I don't have motion sickness or anything- I was just afraid. I noticed my oldest dd starting to be like me and I didn't want to pass it on again so last year before we went to WDW I decided I wasn't going to be afraid anymore- I was going to ride the big rides. I rode BTMR, RNRC, Splash Mountain, Space Mountain, Mission Space, everything but ToT (I just don't like straight down falls). I was really proud of myself- but sitting next to my 8 year old, riding RnRc was probably the best thing I did that whole trip!

I'm not saying it's for everyone- but I'm glad I got over my fear. I still smile when I think about the beginning of RnRc!

I wouldn't worry about BTMR. The first few times I went to WDW I hated any sort of drop, and Space Mountain was a bit scary for me as well. But I always loved BTMR. I never did RnR and Splash Mountain because I was still too scared to go on them the last time I went (over 6 years ago!!) Give it a try when you go, and if you like it, great! If you don't you never have to go on again. Just make sure you have fun!

Honestly, I find Space Mountain to be more frightening than the Rock n' Roller Coaster. Space is very, very jerky, and your restraint is a simple lap bar, plus, there are several spots on that ride where you get "airtime" (the flying-out-of-your-seat feeling.) RnRC, by comparison, is smoother, not as dark, and you're securely locked into your seat by an over-the-shoulder restraint. IT also doesn't really have any "drops", as others have said.

MY GF Nikkie was, three years ago, a HUGE ride chicken. She now rides anything and everything (except for Mission: Space which made her dizzy) and RnRC is among her favorites. It's my favorite ride at WDW.

Yes, it goes upside down, but the IDEA of going upside down is a lot worse than actually doing it. Really, compared to, say Hulk over at Islands of Adventure, RnRC is tame. I think it's a good intoduction to the "modern" steel coaster if you haven't ridden one before.

Thanks for the comparison. I always wondered if I could handle Space Mountain how I would like Rock N Rollercoaster.
The hardest part of SM for me is right before boarding. People can psyche themselves out so badly. I almost chickened out despite having ridden it before. I scream the whole time, my family could hear me from TTA, but I like it in a weird way.
The upside down part is a big factor for my fear of RNRC, but I'm sure that it happens so fast that it's not bad.
I can talk myself into things by saying- look at the little kids and old ladies coming off that ride.
I said that before Mission:Space and then said --those people are nuts. MS was way too much for me.

I don't like that "plummeting to my death" feeling so no TOT for me
Space, Splash and Rock did not bother me at all.
I can't wait to try EE!

I used to be a huge roller coaster chicken. Then my husband took my on Superman Ride of Steel at Six Flags New England. It was a nightmare and I will NEVER do it again. After that, no roller coaster ever seems that bad!! But, having once had the fear, I think I can be helpful with my answers. Oh, and on a side note, people say yelling helps lessen the feeling of dropping in the pit of your stomach. This is totally true, as is simply taking a deep breath and then exhaling it as you go down the hill. My favorite, though, which I started on RNR, is to sing really loudly! How can you not sing along to the Aerosmith songs?? So much fun although I'm sure people think I'm nuts!

Definitely try Big Thunder Mtn. As other have said, there are no big drops. Just little ones and some twists and turns. One word of advice...go in the day time. For some reason, it always feels faster to me at night. There is just one lap bar for both people in the car.

Space Mountain - again, not really an intense roller coaster, as it doesn't have large drops, but again, the darkness creates the illusion of going faster than you are and it's pretty rough going around the turns when you have no idea where you're headed. Everyone has there own lap bar type thing that fits very snugly to your body. You're very secure.

Splash Mountain is a wonderful ride. It's not really a coaster. It's really a cute story throughout and it would be a shame to miss it. There are a few small drops and that one larger one at the end which you can see outside. That part is over in seconds. I think you would be able to handle it for such a short time. The thing that weirded me out the most is that there is no restraints - no lap bar or seat belt or anything, just a bar on the seat in front of you to hold on to.

Rock-n-Roller Coaster - This is probably one the most intense rides in WDW. Honestly, if you are as scared as you say, I would definitely skip this one. While it is a very smooth ride and there are no big drops, the beginning of the ride send you from 0-60mph in seconds and you go right into two loops. My mother-in-law was not very happy with us after she rode this one. Actually, it's so intense that it literally brings tears to my eyes. This one has a full shoulder harness, as do all coasters that have loops. So you're really secure in this one.

Expedition Everest - I can't really help you with this one (well, for another 3 weeks, that is!!) From what I hear, it's fairly fast at times and there is one big drop that is around the size of the Splash Mtn. drop. Individual lap bars are the restraint of choice on this one.

I hope this helps some. Good Luck to you!

I got sick on Space Mountain. Not throw-up sick, but sick enough I don't want to ride it again. Will I get sick on EE? I'm going on Sat. for the first time and I need to know!

I had a dream the other night that I was on TOT and it went crazy dropping then rising then dropping....I'm thinking I'm going to chicken out on going on that this trip (I always chicken out anyways) :thumbsup2

You know what they say about facing your fears...the "elephants" turn out to be tiny, tiny mice. ;)

But I agree - do what you feel good doing. Now some ride advice:

Space Mountain: to me it was a bit daunting because the ride car is fairly open. But it's in the dark so hold on and just go for the thrill!! It was a bit rickedy for me - more like a wooden coaster so it'll feel bumpy.

RNR: More secure in the ride car cause you have a metal harness that locks you in and gives you bars to hold onto. Much smoother ride. Does loop-de-loops. And it's fast. But short in duration - as soon as you've blasted off - it's over.

Splash: This is a boat ride with downhill dips including the major one with lots of water at the end but it is invigorating!!! Plus before the dips and water you go through the whole story of Briar Rabbit.

I haven't been on EE yet. Most of these rides are tame compared to the major roller coaster places like Cedar Point and Disney rides are short.

I had never done a coaster till 6 years ago and I can't believe I waited that long to go on one. It makes you laugh and scream and smile. Disney makes them special with the theming. And if you ever "catch any air" - you'll be hooked.

Thunder Mountain is a good primer to go on for you to take the next step of Splash and maybe Space.

I hope you're able to ride them - Good luck and have a blast!

You want the truth about the Rockin' Rollercoaster? I wish I'd never ridden it. It's made me scared of all rollercoasters. Our school is going to Dollywood in June and I can't even ride the rides with the kids. When the coaster took off it took my breath. I had to will myself to breathe. I said a prayer of thanks when I got off of it still alive. I know some rollercoaster enthusiasts will laugh at me and will think I'm stupid and childish but that's just how I feel about it. I'd really like to ride BTMR cause it looks fun but I'm afraid to.

Sorry to hear about your experience on RnRC. I don't think most people would even think of laughing at you for being scared-- we all have our own limits, fears, and phobias. It sounds like you were pushing your limits riding RnRC.

Having said that, you really should give BTMR a chance. It not too fast, not in the dark, doesn't have any big drops, and doesn't have a "launch" like RnRC does. :thumbsup2

One thing I've noticed with just about any thrill ride is that if you tense up it makes every sensation - drops, turns, jerks, whatever - much more intense. If you can force yourself to relax (if you are at MGM or EPCOT a few drinks can help here), you might find it's not that bad at all. I HATE that falling sensation and have always tended to avoid TOT. However, this past trip I rode it with DD, forced myself to relax and guess what - I LOVE that ride now!!

Same thing with other rides - BTMRR is not what I would call 'intense' or even really classify as a thrill ride, but sometimes it does feel a a bit jerky to me (I have a bad back). However once I started to relax and let my body move with the ride instead of fighting against it, it no longer bothers my back at all.

Most people have no problem at all on EE, but I have to tell you that the part where it goes backwards almost got to me and I never get sick on rides. I thought it was very disorienting. Everyone is different though, so I hate to discourage you because it really is a great ride.

No laughing from me, that's for sure. I hate heights, hate drops. I have done ToT several times, but I'm not happy when I come off. I hate that free-fall feeling. No more!!! But, I love BTMRR...one of our favorites. If you do try it, try to get in one of the front cars. If you sit way back, you will get a bit of 'air time', not much but probably more than you would want. Splash is okay..it's taken me about 12 times to actually get my hands/arms in the air for that final drop. If you push hard against the front with your feet, and push the small of your back hard into the seat back, you don't notice the drop as much.
Okay...Space...I do it because my dd, now 12, loves it. But all that jerkiness really upsets my tummy. I usually just close my eyes...that seems to do the trick, and then I don't tense up, which really is a problem.
I hate Goofy's Barnstormer....almost as much as I hate Primevil Whirl...just can't take that spinning/dropping. OMG...I really have to close my eyes on that one. If I can't see what's coming, my vertigo doesn't kick in.
Which brings me to RnRC....yes, it does flip, and loop. But, honestly, the only way you can tell is that your shoulders hit the restraints. The take-off is a bit on the intense side, but it's only fast. Okay, nasty fast...but it wouldn't make the inversions without that speed. One loop and 2 or 3 corkscrews if I remember correctly. Now, understand...I usually take my glasses off when I ride this one. Just to be on the safe side. So, I can't see anything. But, someone posted a shot of a rollercoaster that was basically the same in design as RnRC, but outside and not covered....well, I thought I was going to die. There is no way in 'you know where' that you would get me on that thing if it were outside and I could see what it was!! But, I have gone on it since seeing that shot. I love RnRC..it's one of our favorites also.
But, if you aren't comfortable with riding something, then don't. It's just not worth it. Perhaps you might want to try to ride them a bit at a time. I would go with BTMRR first, then Splash. Space is jerky, so you might want to pass it by. If all goes well, then hey, give RnRC a shot. If not...don't sweat it. You're on vacation and life is way too short to worry about rollercoasters!!!
