Any advice for a child with pneumonia?

I feel so bad for my daughter today. We were just at the doctors office and she has pneumonia, and as it always goes the timing just stinks. This is the last week of the quarter in school. She is 11 and is in middle school, so there are several tests this week. The doctor wants to see her again on Thursday morning, so I am hoping that maybe she can make it to school after that. Am I hoping for too much too soon?

Also she had signed up for a basketball team and there are only 8 players and their last tournament (out of only 3) is on this Saturday. I asked the dr today if she might be able to play by then and he said probably not, but ask again on Thursday. I just feel bad for her basketball is her favorite thing in the whole world. Do you think there is any hope she will be better by then??
It would be great if she could even play in 1 game for a little bit. I told her I would take her to watch if she cannot play, but I know it is not the same.

Any advice? TIA.

I'm sorry your DD has to be sick. That is too bad.

My guess is that you are just going to have to wait until Thursday to see how she is.

My DS had pnuemonia last year...about 6 weeks before his 8th b-day & 3 weeks before we went on a WDW vacation. He missed about 6 or 7 school days due to that illness.

Hope she's feeling better soon! :)

That really sucks. I have had a sick one  too, though not so bad. I hate to ruin your day, but I think she is probably out for the count. Her teachers :teacher: will deal with her end of quarter testing when she is able to get back, and just ask for homework right now so she doesn't get to far behind. It won't be the first time it's happened and certainly not the last. I would really stay away from the basketball too. Pneumonia is a lung infection and to ask her to run for a tournament all weekend will only impede her recovery. She will most likely end up really gasping for air and be unable to keep up. I understands she loves it and her team needs her, but if you push to fast she could go backwards and end up sick for twice as long. I had it as a teenager and it really takes it out of you:faint:. I would say it will be weeks before she feels normal and stops tiring easily. When my son had Lyme Disease this past summer it took him a full month not to feel completely worn out by the end of the day. Just let her be sick and the rest will take care of itself. Hope she feel better soon:goodvibes . Hang in there:hug: .

My daughter (7) has pneumonia right now and yesterday was rough! (on the verge of going to the hospital!) Today is so much better but still no where near normal. She has a history of getting pneumonia and she does tend to bounce back pretty quickly but I probably wouldn't have her running anytime too soon. You definitely don't want her to relapse! (We've had that happen.) Just have your daughter rest as much as possible and drink lots of fluids.

I know missing sports is not fun but there will be other games. And who knows? Maybe by Thur. her doctor will ok it.

My daughter, age 4 , just got over pneumonia. Her doctor had her on breathing treatments 4 times a day with a nebulizer and 2 other medicines. She would get long coughing fits if she got too active so I held her home from her ballet/tap classes for the week.

A friend is right now at the hospital, watching her father die of pneumonia. It went 'toxic' on him. His organs are starting to shut down, and there's nothing they can do.

Please do not try to push your daughter back into activities too quickly. Make sure she takes all of her medication, and is monitored closely by a doctor.

My youngest had a bout of pneumonia that took over 3 weeks to clear up. Luckily, she responded well to the second medication she was put on. She missed 3 weeks of school, and I didn't care one bit. Schools need to understand that when kids get very, very sick, school is not important.

I hope all of the kids above that have pneumonia get over it safely and quickly.

Well, I don't have any advice as far as how to help her feel better about not getting to play. I was one of those in highschool who pushed it beyond the limit and caused myself to get viruses all the time because of it. Anyhow....as far as suggestions with the pneumonia, be sure to have her cough every couple hours (at least) and change positions a lot as this will help loosen all the junk around in her lungs. Of course drink tons of liquids and even doing some patting on the back can be helpful to get everything moving around in there. Hope this helps.

I feel for your daughter. I have had pneumonia and I know how much it takes out of you. I tried to go back to work after being of almost 2 wks and was short of breath, weak and shakey(and had coughing fits that make you pee your pants:rotfl: ). I was only walking around not running back and forth on the basketball court. I felt guilty being off too long and I ended having to take more time off. She needs lots of rest. The team will survive without her. There will be other games. Big hugs going to your DD:grouphug:

Thanks everyone for the encouragement. I guess I am so used to Strep throat around here where a couple days after antibiotics are started my kids seem back to normal that it was hard to believe my Extremely active daughter was going to feel so bad for awhile. Also next year she has to start trying out for basketball at school so hopefully there will be other games. I can tell now that she is not going to be ready to be running around by Saturday so I am sure that is what the dr will say later today. This is my child that I usually have to sit on until the bus has gone by because she hates to have to stay home from school, and this time there are no complaints. Wow I am rambling on, can you tell my husband is out of town this week? Thanks again everyone. I hope those of you with sick kids of your own start to feel better soon!(the kids that is)
