Any advantage to using Disney Dollars over cash at WDW?

I'm planning on giving each of my kids some cash to spend as they wish at WDW. Is there any advantage to buying Disney dollars with the cash first? (Other than the fact they couldn't spend it anywhere but Disney :teeth: !)

The only advantage I can think of is from a budgetary standpoint. Each kid gets $30 (or whatever) to spend as they please and when they run out of money- that is it. That way you don't get nickel and dimed at the parks, downtown disney...- that adds up fast. You would probably be spending much more than you realize that way. Also I think it is fun way to teach kids about money and responsibility. My kids are getting Disney dollars. I think they are so cute.

There are no discounts associated with them. And if you lose them, they are not replaceable (just like cash).

But, you will get US currency and change back when you don't spend the entire amount. For example, an item costs $8.50 and you give them a $10DD. You get $1.50USD back. So, if you purchased the $DD with a rewards credit card, it's like getting rewarded for nothing on that $1.50 in change (a whole 1½¢). Plus you got rewarded for buying those Mickey Bars and other small items where they don't take credit but they do take $DD.

Lastly, they're cute and fun. The kids like them and they feel "empowered" when they can spend their own money as they choose. It makes a great lesson in saving and making wise consimer choices.

About the only advantage I can think of is that the children might enjoy looking at the Disney Dollars. Of course, that might make them reluctant to actually spend them.

The advantage for us is that we have a fixed amount of money for our kids to spend at WDW and they can only spend it there. (As opposed to spending cash at Walmart or another store.) For us, it's also fun to go to the Disney Store every so often because it helps remind us of our upcoming trip and gives our girls something "Disney" to get excited about. Have a great trip!!!:Pinkbounc

:teeth: LOL, I probably should have mentioned that my "kids" are 15 and 20. But I did take your suggestion, mad4themouse, and bought Disney dollars for them to use and put it on my Disney Visa! I'll take whatever reward dollars I can get. Thanks for the idea!:wave2:
