skorpie, please don't take this the wrong way. I am sure there are nice places and great things to do on the island-
We stayed at The Yepton Resort. Since it did not have a TV or radio, we went into St. John for the evening. All the locals were telling me what a great place this was. Anyway, I found it to be the dirtiest, most run-down city I have ever seen...by far. Not only that, but there were guys urinating freely along the street side, and others were bending over with their heads in dumpsters. The Yepton was about a mile past the run down shack which is a brothel (you know, the one with the Christmas lights). While in the cab to get back and forth to the resort/hotel, there were many goats, wild dogs, and donkeys just aimlessly milling around in the middle of the roads. I found that when taking a cab from the city, all the cab drivers were drinking beer, and yes, they actually have the can between their legs as they drive. That is, until they just throw it out into the street (which I found to be absolutely covered with litter anyway). I was so afraid to eat their meat after seeing the side of beef hanging in the open air butcher shop along the street, that I bought a pre-packaged Oh-Henry bar, and a bag of Lay's chips for dinner (and 2 bottled waters).
It is entirely possible that St. John is not the place to go. Perhaps there are nice places on the island, but we did not know the area so we took the advice of the locals. Oh ya, funny thing-- after all that, we went for a beer, and they did not let me in because I had sneakers on....Go figure!
Again, I want to emphasize that perhaps there are nice places in Antigua that you know of. I would like to hear of them in case I go again....
