Had to go to the dentist today for the first time since getting my new hip. I will have to take 2000 mg of amoxicillin (or another antibiotic) 30-60 minutes before any dental procedure for the rest of my life. All I can say is OMG! I feel like I have a hole in my stomach! It didn't say with or without food- since I took it after I cleaned my teeth I took it without- I think I'll try it with next time.

Any of you have any experience or advice?

You can take it with or without food, which ever you prefer. I think from the sounds of it, taking it with food might work out better for you. I have had loading doses of amox. (1000 mg) with no ill effect so taking it with food may make a big difference.

I've had to take prophylactic antibiotics before dental work for years due to knee replacements. I always take the pills with food.

When I take doxy I have to eat something or else I will be violently ill. I think most antibiotics you should have a little something on your stomach.

I used to take it due to mitral valve prolapse, but in the last couple of years it was determined it wasn't needed for routine dental cleanings. I do need to take it for any surgical procedure. I always made sure I ate something but it really didn't upset my stomach. Amoxicillin can be taken on an empty stomach. Some antibiotics can't.

I have been taking them for several years due to 2 knee replacements. Just wait until you have to take them for 10 days! That was a real treat when I had a root canal! I usually try to get the first appointment of the day and take them with breakfast and have never had a problem.

in two years, check with your orthopedic guy. most joint replacement patients dont have to take them two years post surgery. pre meds are being cut way back.

For 20 some odd years I took antibiotics (mitral valve prolapse) before dental appointments and always with food. I got an awful upset stomach the one time I forgot to eat with them.

As an aside, for whatever reasons, I no longer have a mitral valve prolapse. My new doctor wanted to see the test results for herself and nothing. :confused3 Perfectly healthy heart.

Thats what they told me when I had my root canal, but I asked both my Dr and my Dentist and they both said they wanted me to continue taking them, so I still do.

Mitral valve prolapser here too, and I tell ya just eat yogurt!!

I suffered with stomach upset for so many years until I did this. I eat it before taking the medications.

You should ask for a different antibiotic next time. My DD just got over strep and was prescribed erythromycin, which upset her stomach terribly, with or without food. We called and had them switch it to something else which she can take with no problems whatsoever. I think some antibiotics are just harder on the stomach than others.

My ortho surgeon and dentist have both told me this is "forever" so I assume it is.
