How many here remember Anthony from the Prince Spaghetti ads back in the late 60's, 70's and 80's? Commercial ran for 14 years. He passed away, age 63, on Saturday.

Even today, we find ourselves sometimes jokingly calling out Anthony's name when we have spaghetti here at home. What an iconic commercial! As a kid, he was endearing, as an adult, seemed like he was the same.

Wow I cannot believe he was that old! Is Prince a local brand or was it national? I always thought it was just available in New England.

We've had it here in Illinois forever I think.

Prince - Available in Connecticut, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont. Acquired from Borden in 2001.

Remember it well, as he was around my age, and for years I was often hailed by others using the same intonation as the mother in the commercial. Though some, a teacher in particular, added “Hey” before it.

I also wondered if there were regional differences in when “spaghetti day” was. After seeing the commercial, I recall my father saying that they had macaroni on Thursdays (and Sundays) when he was growing up.

Aw, I remember that commercial.
RIP Anthony.

In my family (mom was Italian-American), it was Friday. Mainly because as good Catholics, my parents abstained from eating meat on Fridays, and my siblings and I, as kids, were not big seafood fans. So we always had some form of pasta with marinara sauce and cheese. (Or occasionally take-out pizza as a special treat.)
