?? Geez.. Even an attempt at contrition is met with a condescending smack. OK, I accept all responsibility for my remarks and/or inferences. Revel in your clearly won victory E, and let me know how clear the view is from up there..

I concede totally.

later....

On a recent Phil Donahue show Christopher Reeves was the guest. He is paralyzed from the neck down. He spoke of the importance of humor in his life, even in the face of adversity. He also told his favorite joke: A fellow actor came to visit and as he walked in the room, he looked at me and said, "Don't get up".

Saphire, there's a BIG difference between the afflicted telling jokes about themselves and the healthy telling jokes about afflictions.

dwbaker, I took no issue with anything that you posted :D ........

Here's a "rip-snortin' fact"...........

MANIC-DEPRESSIVES commit suicide at a rate which is 50 times greater than the rest of our population. Such a riot:rolleyes:

Just waving at EROS, anytime a joke thread goes on this long, I know he's here. ;)

Hey, if I think of any really good punchlines to go with anencephaly, I'll be back to share. ;) ;) ;)

Anencephaly.......not too jocular , but SPINA BIFIDA really gets me going :( ....

Spina bifida is one of the most common birth defects compatible with life. Technically it means an open spinal column, but has come to specifically relate to those instances when not only is the spinal column open, but the spinal cord is incompletely formed and is exposed to the air, the aperta form. The much more common form is the closed or occulta form which is probably of little significance and seen widely in the population, The spinal cord forms in the first few weeks of gestation. In addition to genetic and environmental associations, it is felt that folate deficiency may be an underlying factor in its development. Besides the failure of the spinal cord to form and close properly, other defects can occur in the development of the nervous system. These include hydrocephalus, syringohydromyelia and Chiari malformations. In addition there are poten tial disturbances with the bowel and bladder function, both extremity and spine related problems and respiratory and swallowing difficulties. These problems are due wholly or in part to the disturbance in the nervous system.

You know, EROS, my friend, if you ever become disillusioned with the medical profession, you should consider doing stand-up. ;)

For as long and as much as I've dealt with depression, I sort of considered this joke as joking about myself.

EROS, maybe you would be happier with me on your ignore list.
Maybe I would be happier with you on mine.

Hey, if you were on my IGNORE list, I wouldn't be able to comment about offensive jokes.

Of course, if you put me on Your IGNORE list, then you won't have to see my criticism :) :) :) :) :) .......

Sorry about your history of depression:( . However, unless you've had Schizophrenia, you don't have the foggiest notion how tortured many of these folks are. They may be fodder for a lot of laughs on the DIS, but they deserve our love and empathy........not our ridicule:mad:   ......

Maybe this same level of love and empathy can be remembered the next time a poster says something about how their faith sustains them in times of crisis? Just a thought. :)

Hey, if FAITH sustains people through crisis, then more power to them. My lack of faith is certainly meaningless to them anyway; remember, I'm the one destined for HELL, not them;) ;) ;) .....

I'm not feelin' the love, there, brother. ;) :)

Thank you Sonja!!!

Eros, you seem to have all this compassion and humanity for everyone but the people who post here- you are certainly entitled to your opinons, but so are other people; and there is no need for you to constantly challenge people who beleive different then you do. . .

You have a right to express your opinion that the original joke was beyond your idea of humor, but say that and let it go. . . in my opinon you have a bad habit of driving your points into the ground until they lose any legitimate impact they might have deserve. . .

And if you think something is out of line, let us moderators know. . :)

Willy, you KNOW that I would never go to a moderator with complaints about ANYONE here. Not my style. I don't cry to Momma like some other unnamed DISers who get their feelings hurt.

You're right. I DON'T have much compassion for DISers who publish jokes about those with physical/mental disorders. The last time that such a thread appeared, I objected in the same fashion. It was finally DELETED by CathyCanada after a brave and honest DISer said that she was hurt because she had adopted a child with severe behavioral problems.

I'm sure that there are DISers with a host of MAJOR psychiatric problems. They shouldn't be expected to make their diagnoses known, but I'm sure as HELL going to stand up for them......

No, you just choose to post a couple hundred times complaining and beating people over the head with your opinon. . trust me, us mods would prefer a E-mail. .

Anyway, maybe I'm just high on pixie dust or a disgusting person or a nazi or whatever, but the joke looks within the guidelines to me, so it stays. .

Great point, Sonjah, I never understood why the Christians here are not extended the same sensitivity.

People of faith CHOOSE to have faith. That's their perogative, but it's open to challenge. People who are ill don't CHOOSE to be sick; they often have little choice...........

Saphire, some 'people' have an arrogant, contemptuous disregard for other's feelings and thoughts in their pretension of their own hate-filled souls. Ignoring wretches of that demeanor solves a lot of ills. Just a thought, Saphire.

BTW, Laura, I do see humor in your post.

I've thought of IGNORing such folks around here, but I get too much of a kick out of their sanctimonious hypocrisy;) ;) ;) ;) ;) .......

Eros, do you treat the woman with compassion who has COPD and has chosen to smoke all her life? Do you extend sympathy to the drunk driver who broke both his legs? Do you speak decently to the man you know verbally abuses his wife? If you are a health 'professional' you do. All these people chose in one way or another their direction in life. Your arguement is flawed. Just because I chose my faith is no reason for you not to extend some respect to me and the Christian community here.

Saphire, I do extend such compassion to my patients. In fact, I've often commented that I view their FAITH as an important aspect of their healing.

However, the members on the DIS are NOT my patients (not that any of them would want to be:) :) ). If they post their thoughts, opinions, or beliefs here, they're open to comment and scrutiny.
If I go to a Town Meeting and say that GOD will provide financial resources for our town, another member may get up and say, "EROS, you're dreaming".

We call such interchange...............A FREE SOCIETY.
